The one feature that makes me lean toward the XS is the telephoto camera. I like to take photos of zoo animals (I work at a zoo). The telephoto camera would help me get a little closer to the animals. (I know it's not like having a huge telephoto lens, just that it would be better than a regular iPhone camera on the XR, right?) Anyway, other than the camera, which is the same in every other way, and the display, which either way will be an upgrade for me coming from an iPhone 6, there's no reason to spend the extra $$ for the XS, right?

Any photographers who can weigh in on how much of a difference that telephoto ability will make?

Thanks!

The 2x zoom is not going to make much difference at the zoo. I had a 7 plus before the Xr and I did use the 2x zoom a bit at my sons hockey games, but I think Xr's digital zoom is decent where I can zoom in for the pictures I need. Anything I am printing will almost always be taken with my Canon SLR using the 70-200 2.8 L lens. I use my phone more for snapshots

Go to the store and hold both and test the zoom out.

Here are a couple Zoo pictures from the Xr. The one of the fish was in near darkness, the arctic fox was using the digital zoom, and the flower was not zoomed

Indeed, the 2x zoom is not that amazing. It doesn't have the new larger sensor and lacks a tad bit of details, not to mention low light performance. You'd be better of buying a binocular and shooting from it with your iPhone lol

The $$$ buy you:
- the camera
- oled
- 3dt
- dolby vision

Since you already have a DSLR, I personally think unless you want to spend the $$$, the XR will be fine. That said, I bought the max and am very happy with it and the camera. I think the 2x optical zoom is really cool; and I'm loving the pictures the max is taking.

The thing Apple is not telling you is that the 2x zoom, and telephoto lens, is only used when lighting conditions are perfect. Whenever the iPhone determines that applying digital zoom to the wide angle lens will provide a better picture, it will use that instead and it won't be telling you. You can see this for yourself at an Apple store by tapping the 2x zoom and covering each lens at a time with different lighting conditions. You'll be using the main lens a looooooooooooot more than you think.

Since you're looking to take pictures at the zoo it won't be such an issue to you, but also low-light, no-flash portrait pictures on the XR are A LOT better than those taken by the XS. XR portrait uses the (good) wide angle lens, XS portrait will be using the not-so-good telephoto, and the results won't be as good in that specific condition.

But in broad daylight the XS Max will be the only one able to take some interesting portrait mode photos of those funky zebras.

Ok I went to the Singapore zoo and I used the max 2x zoom A LOT! If I were in your situation where I am exposed to these animals from a distance every day I would go with the 2x Xoom. For me, since I use them on vacation I would rather get a physical zoom lens for my xr that I went to away from the max.
