Is this a good buy and machine? I currently have a Mac mini 2012.
Been looking to upgrade for a while waiting for the new M1 iMac 27 inch or what they come out with. Alternative is the M1 mini and new monitor. My only concern is the Intel support as Apple going towards there own chips and I’d keep this machine for a very long time.

Apple IMac (2020) 27 Inch With Retina 5K Display, 3.8GHz 8-Core 10th Gen Intel® Core™ I7 Processor, 512Gb SSD

I'd get the M1 Mini if you need something now. It's excellent and runs very cool.

2022 should be a fun year to buy an iMac. A larger screen Apple silicon device and an updated 24 inch version. Patience is your friend.

I'm in a similar situation....
Sitting with an old 2013 iMac and waiting fir the next larger iMac. It's hard to wait...
Fortunately I have a 2018 MBA too, which makes my situation different.

If you can wait, do it. But only you know how much you need a new machine now.

They say the larger M? iMac won't come out until next year, I hope however for a sooner presentation, and clearer info. But as now, all we have is speculations and hope.

If you're desperate I would go for the M1 Mini now too.

I’ve got a 27 inch screen already with my Mac mini I want the same size or more tbh.

That is an option also but then it’s which monitor to go with it I have looked at the mateview one from huawei
yes, sticking with the same screen size makes sense, although I've looked at the 24" imacs and the screens are actually quite nice, even in comparison to my own 27" iMac. But then why can't you use your existing monitor with a new mac mini?

"My only concern is the Intel support as Apple going towards their own chips and I’d keep this machine for a very long time."

I suggest you keep using the 2012 Mini until the new larger-screen iMac with the m1pro CPU is released.

I predict it will arrive in either January or February. That's really not that far off in the future, when you think about it.

Remember... if you buy the 2020 Intel iMac, you're going to be "left behind" with that Intel CPU (in your own words from above) "for a very long time".

That by itself isn't bad -- IF you have sound reasons for wanting to stick with Intel as Apple moves away from it.
But that's a question only you can answer for yourself. We can't answer it for you.

I wouldn't buy the m1 Mini, either.
I sense that a new m1pro Mini is "waiting in the wings", almost ready to be released.
It may arrive with the new iMac, or perhaps not.
We'll just have to wait and see.

But again, I'd wait at least until the new iMac is announced, and THEN you can choose between it or the Intel iMac...

I would also recommend going with an M1 Mini, and either a MateView or LG UltraFine 5K, or better yet waiting until next year's 27" iMac comes out. It's going to be incredible. Only buy an Intel Mac if you need legacy x86 Intel support.

Edit: Just to give a brief reasoning of why I suggest waiting, it's because I expect the 27" iMac's replacement to have:
  • More powerful GPU / CPU
  • Vastly superior panel w/ mini-LED and ProMotion technologies.
  • Better speakers
  • Nicer design more in line with the gorgeous 24" iMac
  • An Apple Silicon chip - this gets its own bullet point because you are highly unlikely to get many more years of Intel support from macOS updates, whereas the M1 Pro / Max chips will likely get software updates for a long time
  • TouchID in the included keyboard
  • Better camera (although I think the 27" iMac had been the only Mac with a 1080p webcam prior - it will still be improved due to the ISP in Apple Silicon)

Another option are also to buy one of the new M1 MBP's with pro or max chips and 1 or 2 monitors.

In that case you have both a powerful portable, which can also be a stationary.
Depending if you need a portable at all?

This model in first half of 2022 will be replaced with a M1 Pro/Max model redesign and will be considerably aged when that happens. All the suggestions of using M1 Mini, 24" iMac, and specially the last one using a 2021 14" M1 Pro MBP in clamshell mode with a monitor are more viable. Especially when you can take it mobile also.

My opinion is, there will always be something new. I suggest getting what you need for now. However, I will add, anything you buy now from Apple, I would go with the M1 variant, versus an Intel.

Again, merely my opinion...

Thanks the advice I’m going to wait it out I was tempted by the £400 discount though.
My Mac 2012 is still going all though with an external hardrive as the internal died

Sounds like you have decided to wait and see, which I think is wisest, but in case you change your mind: I don't think a 512GB SSD is a good long term choice. I suggest hold out for 1TB SSD.
(Coming from a 2020 27" iMac owner.)
