I just took delivery of my AudioEngine A5's....man, am I ever happy!! These babies sound terrific hooked directly to my MBP. Now I'll have to spend about an additional $1,000USD to get a sub (probably the AudioEngine AS8) & DAC (probably a Apogee Duet), then I'll be in audio heaven!!

Talking about Audioengine, I tested the A2 recently agains the US version of the Bose MusicMonitor. A frustrationg experience to say the least as I may have had a defective A2. The highs in the A2 were very recessed in comparison. if they were better, I would have kept the A2s.

PC Magazine's review of the Bose mentioned the A2 also in cimparison.

I've never auditioned the A2's, so I can't comment on them. All I can say is that after ~12 hrs of "burn in", my A5's sound terrific!

I would really love to listen to a pair of these M3 - they look just like the £20 Sony speakers you get in the Argos catalogue, yet they cost £200? At that price, I could put together competition of a Marantz PM4001 amplifier with Eltax Symphony 8.4 floorstanding speakers.

(Of course if portability is your concern, I would have to put together different competition.)

The whole point of the Bose is precisely it's size. If size wasn't an issue, every other Bose produce up to that price range sounds BETTER than the MusicMonitors, along with a whole slew of other branded speakers. But they are difficult to travel with.

The closest sounding unit on the market that occupies the same physical size in cubic inches (it's a round tube instead) is the Boomtube with a built in lithium ion. 40 watts RMS. Seem to have better highs. Bose is better in the bass and lower mids -not necessarily by a whole lot though in some pieces of music.

By the way, does anyone know the date of introduction of the Bose M2 and M3 in Japan?

For some reason, I thought the M3 came first and then only the M2 more recently.

Thanks,
