I have a mid 2012 Retina Macbook Pro and its display is flickering. It only flickers at the bottom of the screen where the dock is but sometimes it bothers after working on it a long time.

I was wondering if it is still worth the time and money to fix the motherboard (assuming is a graphics card problem) or the display.

The display cost $699 to fix while the motherboard cost $450 to fix in my country. Not going to fix both but that's a rough gauge of it.

Do you think it makes any sense to do it this way or I should just get out there (Online Store) to purchase a new Retina Macbook Pro 16".

Thanks in advance.

Personally, for 8 year old technology- sell it for parts and get one of the new machines. 8 years is a good run. The new ones are speedier, more capacity, etc.

I have just replaced my mid-2012 MBPr as it was getting a bit too long in the tooth. Had a loose hinge, a dead battery, some dead pixels and its audio port had never worked. Apple classed it as Vintage and any repairs were going to be so expensive I just upgrade to the entry level MBPro 16". Difference is night and day. If you can afford it I don't think you would regret taking the plunge.

The mid-2012 rMBP has a GPU issue. You may consider that defect before fixing.

It may be better to buy a different model. I have the 2012 rMBP, sold it and replaced it with a 2012 cMBP.

I've just upgrade my late-2013 15" MBP with the 2020 Air. The Pro was fine apart from a smashed screen. I was quoted around 750 CHF (1 CHF ~ 1 USD) to replace the screen and ended up spending 1100 for the Air.

My plan is, once I get hold of a p5 pentalobe screwdriver, to remove the screen of my Pro and use it connected via HDMI to my TV as a media server. It works like that now, but there's something cool about having it screenless I think :)

I've already set it up so I can ssh (terminal) and vnc (screen share) into it, and I'm enjoying playing with it like this. Worth much more to me in fun than selling "for spares or repair".

Sounds like more money to fix it than it's worth.
Time for something new or at least relatively new.

I have a 2014 15 and a 2015 15. They both work great.

If one had a failure, I'd buy a 16 and then look at fixing the old one afterwards. I tend to think that I wouldn't repair it unless it was cheap and easy.
