Occasionally when I am using my watch(in an app or whatever) I get a text at the same time and get zero notifications so the only way I know I got a text is the text app has the number on it. Is that normal? Or is there a setting I’m missing somewhere?

You should still get text alerts when you use the watch only if the iPhone is locked. If the iPhone is unlocked, you won't get notification on the watch.
Alerts on the phone or the watch? This has happened a handful of times since I got my watch but I am unsure if my phone was locked or not. I 99% sure it was locked as I was using my watch at the time and phone was in my pocket.
