Update cycle is mostly based on how much money you spend each month. I assume that is why I am able to upgrade every 12 months. I have 4 iPhones on a small business account. Also have a number of employees using our fan account for a discount.

If that is the case, then I stand corrected. I was under the impression that everyone was eligible for an upgrade annually.

Thinking of upgrading my iPhone 3g to the 4 - I've seen the 4 and love it - my only concern is that there may be a new version coming out soon due to some of the problems that exist and I'll get screwed on it. Is that likely, or unlikely? If there's only a small chance of new hardware within the next several months I'll get the 4 now, otherwise might wait a bit to see. Sent Steve Jobs an e-mail asking but no reply :)

Thanks!

LOL @"there may be a new version coming out soon.."
Really? What in the world makes you believe this? Have they ever done this before? I don't think so. Stop dreaming and stop being silly.

I bet you said the same thing when the 3GS came out. Now you are saying the same thing for the iPhone 4 (even though this is the most significant change for the iphone, in terms of both hardware and software wise). Why don't you just wait for the iPhone X. Also, its not like any of the previous iPhones had any of their own problems right?

Look, any piece of technology you buy today will be outdated as soon as you buy it. No point in playing the waiting game.

You clearly want an iPhone regardless of all these "problems" people are having. I personally don't have any problems with mine. I do have the reception phenomena, but any god damn phone will have the same reception problem if you hold it a certain way. That's just a limitation on the cellular technology, not the phone itself.

A new version of any product will come out "very soon".
So just wait and maybe that new version will last longer than the previous one. NOT.

If you want it, JUST ****ING BUY IT.

I'm done.

 Who peed in your Cheerios? You could have made your point without the ignorance.

Honestly, I'd wait. I bought mine on launch day, and I'm waiting for my genius appointment tomorrow when I switch mine out for a new one. If the new one still has the same issues, then I'm returning it and waiting it out myself. It's gonna suck really freaking bad because I love this thing, but this issue really is inexcusable. I can't help but think that they will resolve this though...some how.

Inexcusable to the point of, god forbid, switching from an iPhone to...oh...an Android phone? I didn't think so.

All you guys complaining and whining about these problems, you still want it and won't think about switching to an Android phone will you?

So, stop whining and complaining. Be happy with your iPhone 4.
It is the best phone on the market today period.

I'm not offended - this is standard for this guy apparently - he's made 20 posts so far since joining the forum and I think 17 of them are just nasty and rude. Just another person who feels the rules of civility don't apply when you're not speaking with someone face to face.

Thanks to everyone else though for the good advice!

Never assume. Some people are jerks in real life too. :D

Enjoy the new phone. Might want to get front & back protection ordered now too so you have it in hand before your new phone shows up.

What do you suggest, an invisibleshield? I haven't decided if I'm going to get a case yet - I've had a case on my 3g since I got it but the new phone just looks and feels so smooth I don't want to ruin it with a case (of course, with my luck I'll drop it in a week).

I use the IS front and back and think it works great. Some will argue that it has the orange peel look and inhibits the feel of the touch screen, but it seems to smooth out over time. Others have suggested Ghost Armor works great as well.

The invisibleshield protects well against scratches, but is difficult to apply and has a slight orange-peel-like texture. It also doesn't really help against drops, as only a case protects against that.

You might want to get some Power Support crystal film for the front, as it's easier to apply and protects well. If the film does get scratched (and it might, although pretty unlikely), it's easy to remove. You also get two to a pack, and so you have an extra. However, only the antiglare version is shipping; the really clear version, which reflects light just like the iP4, is not yet shipping.

If you really need to go naked (and I'd recommend against that, due to the antenna issues), you might want to apply some clear egrips to the sides, to help prevent the iPhone from sliding out of your hand. I did this with the original 2007 iPhone, and it helped a lot. I'd just get a sheet of clear egrips (not anything specially made for the iP4, because it's cheaper) and cut pieces to fit. However, note that the clears aren't all that clear (they're a bit milky), and have a really obvious orange-peel look (molded pattern for gripping), but this shouldn't really be noticeable on the sides.

You could also apply some egrips to the back (not the front, as "clear" really isn't clear); if you do that, the iP4 will be really hard to slide around on a table (and fall off). However, you might not like the look.

The IS should work well for the back, but something like Power Support crystal film (not yet shipping for the iP4) is probably better for the front. It's easier to install, and it's virtually impossible to tell that you have it on. It feels just like a naked screen. The only real issue is that it's not oleophobic; however, since that wears off over time, I don't think it really matters (and, if you ever want to sell the phone, having an intact oleophobic screen might be a good selling point).

I think it's worth it going from a previous gen to an iPhone 4. The amount of features added and redesign are worth it. But ultimately it's up to you. You shouldn't be asking others because most likely you'll be fine with what you have now. I'm willing to spend the $700 plus tax to buy one since I'm on T-Mobile and have the $6 data plan, which I am not willing to give up.

I'm having the same issues with the Bluetooth. And I'm already sporting a bumper. Please update this thread after your visit to the genius.

Ok, they replaced my original and everything seemed perfect. Then it started all over again. I came across a few threads about the issue on here, but I found a bunch of people having the Bluetooth issue on the Apple community forums. From what I gather it's related to iOS4. I'm really hoping to hear something about an update because I REALLY love this thing and do not want to return it. I use Bluetooth constantly and cannot go without it. My 3GS is still good...I guess.

Thanks for the update. I called and have an open case with apple support. I did a full restore and still having issues. If this is iOS4 related then I shouldn't look forward to a replacement. My bluetooth get's hung up for 20 minutes after any charging activity on this screen.

I figured I'd let you know how I made out this time. I got my second replacement yesterday, 7/11, and I hope I'm not speaking too soon, but SO FAR I have not had even one issue with the Bluetooth connection. My fingers will be crossed, but we'll see.

Once I get the new phone (hopefully soon), going to try to recoup some of the cost by ebaying the old one. Would I get more if it's jailbroken and unlocked, or should I sell it factory restored?

I got a replacement shipped out to me and I'm still having the problem. I'm thinking it's an app that I have installed. I also plug my phone into the wall charger and power down every night. When I get up in the morning, power on and try to enable bluetooth, it get's hung up while trying to initialize. I'm gonna have to delete all my apps, reinstall at least 5 at a time and try a process of elimination. Anyway good luck with yours.

Wait!

Wait!

You'll be so glad you did.

I bought an _iLemon_ because I trusted Apple & pre-ordered mine online.

I believed it would be a usable phone, but when it arrived I was shocked. It's the first Apple product I've bought in over a decade as a loyal customer, that was so bad. Now I have a replacement, it was OK for the first few days, but then it's defects surfaced.

Save yourself the time & trouble. Give Apple a chance to get back on track.

Get yourself on a few priority lists at apple stores near you. You'll be waiting 2-3 weeks, and can cancel if you want. =P
