I am a 27 year old male with a cognitive/intellectual disability. I don’t leave the house other than to go out to eat or split time between my mom and dads house. I’m unable to drive and have been disabled since I was 19. I have a working smartphone which I barely use other than to call and text family members and send pictures of my dogs. I don’t have friends to iMessage with and I like to play video games and surf the net, watch videos, etc. I’m leaning toward the iPad since I’m home 99% of the time and only make one or two phone calls a day. One when my dad gets off work and one call to my mom. The larger screen makes sense to me and iPads at least the non pros are a lot less expensive than an iPhone with data plans. Just in case I’m missing something what are you guys/gals thoughts on the matter? I’d have to save up for a while but the regular iPad looks promising at $400

iPads are more computerish than an iPhone and the battery will let longer hour wise and year wise.
can you get both?

I apologize. I’m disabled with a very limited budget. Eventually I’ll be able to have both but right now I have to pick one to save up for.

I think for your use, the iPad with its bigger display is nicer.

Don't get the smallest 32GB storage. iPadOS has gotten larger and you only get around 15GB usable on the 32GB model.
Oh wow! 15gb. That’s nuts. I’ll be sure to not get the 32gb model. Thank you!

go for the iPad or even a Samsung galaxy tablet with voice?
but android and google are bad!

just for record the iPad i use frequently is a 2017 G5 were the new ones are better and still $329.
they make cheap thumb drives for these were a 128GB can cost under $40 and has a 3 year guarantee,

Thank you so much for your recommendation. Right now I have an android phone and agree google is bad haha.

Since the Pandemic I don’t even go out to eat that much anymore. Everything is delivery.

Also get an iPhone 12 Pro MAX

You would be best served by the iPad based on what your situation is, either the 10.2” iPad (128GB) or the base iPad Air (64GB). I know the Air may be a stretch money-wise, but it will last longer and has more capabilities than the smaller iPad does. If your streaming lots of content (movies, TV, YouTube, etc) you won’t need that much storage, although 32GB is just not enough anymore, I think the 64GB Air would be just fine for your needs.

Thank you very much for the in depth post. I really appreciate it. I could easily get by on 64gb but 32gb is too small I agree.

Another vote for the iPad from me since you don’t have as much of a need for it to be super portable and mobile. It’s really great for using around the house to browse the web, play games, watch videos, etc. Your reasoning in the OP is sound. All of the iPads are incredible - I’d probably recommend the 128GB 10.2” iPad as another user suggested, but the extra $170 to get up to the 64GB iPad Air is well worth it if you have the money.

The regular iPad comes in Silver, Space Grey and Gold.
The iPad Air comes in Space Grey, Silver, Rose Gold, Sky Blue and Green.

Which color would you get if you were going to get one?

Welcome to MacRumors, by the way :)

I guess usual ipad/ipad mini is a choose. Larger display, long-time battery, cheaper, powerful enough. At least 64Gb (128+ is better). Well, you can not call by number, that is all you miss. In rest use cases you would get more per/$.

Regular iPad - Space Grey

iPad Air - Space Grey, Rose Gold, or Sky Blue. Hard to pick for the Air!

I’d definitely say iPad if you already have a phone.

What capabilities does it have over the smaller iPad?

Weird thing to ask- it’s pretty obvious what they mean!

Not obvious at all. Both run iOS more or less both are computers. I wouldn’t ask if it were obvious.
I’d assume by ‘computerish’ they meant it has a bigger screen like a computer since otherwise the two devices are functionally almost the same. But I agree it wasn’t clear because the word ‘computer’ has other connotations, so to use that word to only describe its obvious trait of being bigger could easily cause someone to infer those other connotations. It would have been clearer than ‘computerish’ and more useful than ‘bigger’ to say something like ‘more productivity oriented and immersive’.

Really? It’s not obvious? The iPad can come with a 12.9” screen, and a magic keyboard with a track pad. It is targeted with the ‘what’s a computer’ campaign, and has more powerful desktop level apps.
Agreed the iPhone is a computer. But the iPhone is an iPhone. The iPad is more computerish without a doubt.

Since the OP is on a budget, I would definitely say get the 10.2" iPad. While 32GB is limiting in terms of storage, if the OP streams a lot of their movies/TV shows, they could potentially get by. My wife has the 32GB model and she utilizes iCloud and streams everything, so space isn't really an issue.

That said, if the OP doesn't want to use iCloud or likes downloading movies/TV shows locally, then the 128GB would probably serve them better.

iPadOS uses ~7GB, Other uses another ~7GB so that's just ~16GB usable. 32GB is more than enough for pure video streaming. It's the apps and games storage that's iffy.

I'd say get an iPad as well! Would follow others recommendations and say don’t get the 32GB version, its just to small and becomes a headache rather quickly. If you are planning on keeping it for a while, it would be worth saving up and waiting to get a 64/128GB one. Thats when decisions get harder though, as there is more overlap between size, features and price between the models available.
