Go with OFM 2011

I know this thread is a bit stale but I am beta tester for Office for Mac 2011 and this package is very very nice. Yes it does use the ribbon and compatibility with Office for Windows so far has been 100%. Outlook is very well developed.

I have completely stopped using OFM 2008 and will unload it completely when I get the final commercial version of OFM 2011...

Cheers,

jms

In an ideal World, both

It'll cost more but I'll probably get both. Office for Excel + Macros (so fed up with 2004...) and a bit of compatibility with the rest of the World. Pages and Keynote to make creating my own content a joy. Numbers is fine for simple stuff without the Excel baggage. Can't wait to see what they've added to iWork 11 - I hope it's a lot more than updated iOS apps and smoke in Keynote.

It looks like MS have made a big effort with this version but I wonder how long it will take to drill down to very old code and very outdated Office conventions. I just like my software to embrace everything that is good about OS X. So many Apple and 3rd party apps do this, I should not have to jump through hoops backwards to use software.

If it wasn't for Excel and other folk using Word, I'd have ditched Office long ago.

I'd say get Office since you will be turning stuff in on it.
If you really want iWork for personal use, go ahead and torrent it.

Morals this morals that, ya, ya chill, I'm not killing anyone.

Not killing anyone. So I guess its ok if I break into your home and steal your Mac. Just saying...I wouldn't be killing anyone.

Bad and very wrong reasoning.

If you're willing to pay the high price for the Mac, you think you could afford to buy software for it. If you're just going to steal, you should have just stolen a Mac from an Apple Store*. It would've saved you so much money, right?

To get back on topic, I prefer iWork because of the more affordable price. Majority of the files I share for my job are between Macs with iWork, so there is no need for office. For school I have to submit paper copies, so there is no worry about compatibility options. That being said, the new Office for Mac is looking pretty good, but it's not something I'd get any use out of.

*Don't steal Macs either.

I purchased upgrades to iWork '05 for my PowerBook 17. None of the suite's application could be used to exchange files with Microsoft Office users.

I switched to OpenOffice and then NeoOffice when it became available. I've had no problems exchanging files with Microsoft Office users until last week. Apparently, Microsoft has a new Excel spreadsheet format that is saved with the .xlsm extension.

Having a copy of Office for Mac 2011 might be a good choice assuming that there are no substantial discrepancies between the two Office products.
