The big difference I see between them is Motion 5 is $50 and you keep forever, while After Effects is $20 a monthly fee.. Is there a absolutely huge difference between the two programs? I'm working on a project that requires some graphics FCPX can't do alone and I'm trying to be cost effective.

Motion 5 integrates well with FCPX. If you don't need all of the bells/whistles/dohickies that After Effects has (along with the steeper learning curve), get Motion.
