So I don't think I will be able to afford the new iphones.

I want to upgrade from my 16gb SE. I live in Thailand and the XR has been reduced in price.

Should I get it now? And if so, what size? 64gb or 128gb?

Finally will it be around for a while? In the Apple store they were kind of pushing that the price reduction would only last until stock runs out - insinuating it would.

Thoughts? Advice?

If you can wait a few more weeks the XR will reduce in price. I upgraded from an SE to the XR. I can say I have mixed feelings. I like the bigger screen, but sometimes I wish I got an 8. This phone is blazing fast. Go for it!

What if I wait until December, will there still be stock at the same price??

Of course. The XR is not a discontinued model - it's part of the current lineup, just at a lower price point and it was mentioned along with all the other current models at the keynote. They don't do that for devices that are going to disappear within a few months. If anything you might find it at a lower price from third party sellers by december.

The price has been reduced by Apple in their official line-up, but I don't know about their resellers. In Europe where I live, the local premium resellers still haven't put up the prices for the 11 and 11 Pro/Max models, so the price for the XR remains the same. I suppose they'll only lower the XR's price at the time of or immediately prior to posting the prices for the new models. After all, you never know if someone who doesn't follow these things will walk into the store a day before the price drop and buy one of the older models at the old price point.

So, if you know the price has been reduced, that's it then. But if you're not sure if the price should be dropping even further, maybe wait until the newest models are in the line-up so you can compare prices.

Also, like others said, you shouldn't worry about stock. The XR will remain in the line-up officially, so you'll be able to purchase it later, as well. It's not like it will run out of stock and won't be ordered again. You'll still be able to buy the XR this time next year and I don't see the price going back up because they ran out of stock. That won't happen because Apple has changed the pricing and the stores will have to keep prices at that level to maintain balance between the 8 and 11 models.

I went from an SE to an XR a couple of months ago (both 128gb, the minimum I’ll deal with now which ruled out the 8 at the time).

I had zero regrets at the time and I have zero regrets now, knowing what the 11 brings (it helps that I bought an open-box model and got the XR cheap anyway). The Xr is a fantastic phone with a great screen (identical to the 11), great camera, and amazing battery life. I love Face ID and the gestures in place of the home button. It’s a huge upgrade on the SE in every way. Of course it’s bigger, but I refuse to see that as a disadvantage when all that space is given over to the screen and bigger battery.

Of course the 11 is a little better in most ways, but it’s the usual iterative update - there’s no must-have new feature, and nothing it does that the XR doesn’t already do very well.

In terms of longevity, it has many years to run I suspect. I’m running the iOS 13 beta right now and it flies. Bear in mind at the same event this week they launched a brand new iPad based around a chip (the a10) that’s two years older than the XR, I think iOS support will be around for a while yet.

XR has dropped 100 bucks in my area....I'm sure more deals will come along.
