I just bought a new 2018 MacBook Pro 15-inch while I was in the UK, it was a spur of the moment buy. The specs:

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: MacBook Pro

Model Identifier: MacBookPro15,1

Processor Name: Intel Core i9

Processor Speed: 2.9 GHz

Number of Processors: 1

Total Number of Cores: 6

L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB

L3 Cache: 12 MB

Memory: 32 GB

1TB SSD

I had a perfectly excellent working 2012 series MBP bought new in 2015 that's in excellent condition and I installed 16g ram and a SSD drive but suffered a brain fart for a moment, I am completely happy with this new one and probably won't need to replace this one for at least a decade or more but wonder if I should have waited for the '19 model.

Nope, you're in the club now the 2012 is in the review mirror. When the 2019 comes out you can always sell/buy again.

No laptops run is a tick tock phase, Tick being the Boom Tock being the level out phase so unless you were planning to wait until 2020 for an upgrade then you shall be fine.
