iPod cables have the two push buttons on the sides to release it from the iPod. The iPhone cable doesn't...should I just pull it out?

That's a dock connector cable, so it doesn't have the tabs that hold it in. Go ahead and pull it out. If you use a regular iPod cable with the iPhone, you will have to press the buttons on the side to release it.
The dock cable works just like the dock itself. 😉

they are all dock connector cables. considering the fact that the connector on ipods and iphones alike are called dock connector. so to say it is a dock connector cable is not distinguishing anything
