3-year AppleCare Warrantie

You can find 3-year AppleCare Warranties for Macbook Pros for between 150 and 200. Feedback from buyers suggests that it's for real.

Better run and purchase mine now before there's a rush! :)

3-Year AppleCare Warranty

I just purchased mine for $204, but could have gotten it cheaper if I had followed the directions properly. First go to www.live.com and then paste the seller's name and item etc. That takes you to the reduced (25%) auctions.

Oh well. $204 for AppleCare is a pretty sweet deal, I think.

..I'm going to keep it - should be here by Wednesday. Hopefully it was manufactured after September. Do you happen to remember the name of the program that determines manufacture date?

I think I'll also invest in AppleCare. I've found a deal to get it for $150.00, seems worth it.

I think it was somewhere in the last 5 pages of the "So are all the people with the 8600 GT screwed" thread that is for some reason still the perennial favorite on this board....

Seriously, dude - enjoy your new computer, you got a killer deal for what was, until one month ago, and for many people still is, the best laptop in production.

Just Got My New (Old) Powerbook

Well, I accepted shipment for the new Macbook Pro. Beautiful computer, although it does feel a lot like my old Powerbook G4 - just a nicer screen, camera, and a lot more under the hood. Oh, ad this backlit keyboard is pretty nice.

Anyway, thanks to everyone for the advice. Now, anyone want a very used and very functional Powerbook G4? :)

Build Date of My New Powerbook Sept 8-14, 2008

According to Coconut Identity Card, my new MBP 2.4 was built between Sept 8 and 14, 2008. Does this mean I'm out of the woods in terms of the 8600 issue?

Even if your MBP was made before Oct1st, Apple covers the GPU for two years without Apple care - you'll be fine. The screens alone are enough reason to not get the Macbook Alu's.....

Take it from me, I've been a long time matte user and one of the people pissed off of that matte is no longer offered. I've always been a desktop user and so this is my first laptop...and trust me if matte was offered I would have ordered it w/ that feature. I wanted a new one w/o the nVidia timebomb issue so I decided to gamble w/ trying glossy as I've never had that feature before and was just hoping I would enjoy it and not hate my machine. It was a hard decision because I was also a fan of the old keyboard. I'm now on my 3rd day with this machine and i LOVE the screen, its gorgeous and much more vivid than the matte I have on my iMac and previous displays. Now I haven't taken it outside or on the road yet but working at home w/ lots of windows and daylight I have to say it is no problem whatsoever and really glad I made the right purchase for me.

Honestly if the color calibration is an issue because you're doing such high end graphics work you should probably be on a pro external monitor anyways but I can understand the conerns there. Anyone else shouldn't be concerned w/ something like that. I think both models have their pros & cons but anyone who calls this new machine awful or "fugly" clearly is biased or jealous; its really an amazing machine.

$1300 for the 2.4 old version is a good deal and since you can't afford the new one I'd go for it and get AC so you have 3 yrs of protection. Its a very good machine too!

Congrats on your new purchase. Hope you like the "classic" MBP, looks like you got a good deal.

Well, I want a new one - it's really time, after all the PB G4 is now more than five years old and I'm having a few kernel panics a day, it seems (thing must have 10,000 hours on it).

I could get a new Macbook for 15% off (cousin works at Apple), but I thought the MBP has a nicer screen and I like the old style keyboard more. I just don't want to be stuck with a lemon.

I was in the same position, buy the new MBP or old MBP. I ended up with a refurb MBP because of the screen, the new ultra glossy screen is terrible IMHO.

The 8600M GT defect is only in a few chipsets not all like most people will lead you to believe, and Apple wasn't the only company effected by the nVidia SNAFU HP and Dell to name a few did get the dodgey chips as well.

Personally I'd go for the older but if you're worried out the video card burning out purchase Applecare then you're covered for 3 years.

You have no evidence of this.

OTOH, there have been reports of GPU failures from seemingly all months since the SR was released up until Sept build dates, ones with supposed "Rev 2" boards failing.

Apple wasn't the only company effected by the nVidia SNAFU HP and Dell to name a few did get the dodgey chips as well.

Yeah, that's the point. The GPU itself has a design flaw. This is only an Apple issue to the extent of how they want to resolve it with their customers.

I'm glad you can understand the concerns... which to me have nothing to do with color calibration. It's the glossy I don't like. Why is this so hard for those of you who do like it... to understand? So you like it. I'm happy for you. There's nothing you can say to make me like it. Honest. I wish it weren't so, Joe, but it is. :) I really don't need saving... or convincing, although I do appreciate your desire to set those of us you feel have gone astray, straight. :)

I think you fall into the trap of believing your opinion is objective, and someone who doesn't agree with you, well their opinion is somehow biased... or jealous. I see this type of argument made on FoxNews all the time about moderate and liberal viewpoints - how they're all part of a "liberal agenda" so "obviously, they aren't valid, and can't be taken seriously." (typical Hannity or O'Reilly stuff)

I'm one who doesn't find the new design elements of the new MBPs to be attractive. Sorry. I just don't find them attractive compared to the "classic" design. Would I like an updated "classic" design? Sure. Leave it one color, gray, aluminum, graphite, whatever, just understated and clean. Update some things, mainly in the internals. The outer design wasn't screaming for a facelift, at least not by anyone I know who uses them for a living. They were more interested in reliability, power, connectivity, serviceability, display resolution, and things like that.

I'm sure the design cues (glassy/black/chicklets/cool battery lights/no button trackpad, etc) of the new models had nothing to do with answering the upgrade needs of someone using it primarily as a work tool, but instead anwered the upgrade desires of all the folks griping about the "outdated looks" of the previous model. And thats fine. It's Apple's choice. They obviously hit the mark with a lot of people, but honestly... to me... the old ones were just classier looking. Not as trendy, of course, but classy. My opinion, mind you. I've considered it in my mind long enough to be sure of how I feel. So, please lay off the "biased or jealous" BS... okay? ;)

Someone's got an ego don't they? ;) Who said I was talking to you anyways? I could care less which model of computer you want, I was strictly stating an opinion based on my experience. Like whatever you want. If you don't think color calibration isn't a concern with some users then you haven't been paying attention.

You're way off base here cowboy. Some posters in here have been ripping the new machine unfairly, the fact you don't see that is because they're obviously preaching to your choir. That some people have come across as biased doesn't mean I think everyone who prefers the old one is "jealous." Where did I say that? It was specifically directed at people declaring it "fugly." Big difference between that and preferring the old model. The same psychology can be applied to people who hack on the old model too much. I stated in my post I like both designs, what part of that don't you understand? It was a tough decision for me but I decided on the new model. Its called an opinion. Try not to take offence if I don't look for your validation m'kay? :p

In regards to your thoughts on the design, I'd have been more than happy with that. In fact its what I wanted to be honest. First and foremost the internals are what mattered to me most. I didn't want the 8600 gpu and couldn't handle the audio bugs of the previous machine. I was informed they overhauled the audio in the new model and sure enough there is no sound issues on mine. Kind of important to a musician. I bought the machine to perform, not as a fashion statement.
