Today I received my iPad 2017 and it was real smooth running 10.3.3 so I upgraded to iOS 11 PB7 and i’m seeing a little bit of lag and stutter. Should I toss up the performance hit because it’s a beta and new OS or is it because the A9 will have problems running iOS 11?

I could get the 10.5 from BH Photo and they may pricematch Best Buy.

While ultimately the decision is up to you, I’d say do it

I purchased the 2017 ipad after my ipad 4th gen became painful to use. While I used the iPad 2017 for a couple of months and was initially impressed with its speed, size and overall user experience I eventually longed for the iPad Pro smartkeyboard and pencil functionality. Unfortunately I waited until after the return policy to decide on this and thus had to purchase the new iPad Pro separately. I ended up giving my 2017 iPad to my girlfriend while I upgraded to the 10.5 with pencil and ASK.

The 2017 iPad is a great iPad for most people. The display, refresh rate and smart accessory compatiblity of the iPad Pro make it worthwhile to upgrade. . . Especially if you’re within the return policy.

Unless you have a workflow that needs the pencil what will you gain from it?
Beta are betas, I never use version .0 releases of iOS as the performance improvement and bugs fixes normally don't appear until .1

I agree with the AFEPPL:

If you need the pencil, do not hesitate otherwise stick with the iPad2017. It will work fantastically for a couple of years, then you can decide if you really needed the pencil or not.

I have the 10.5 and use the pencil daily, so it was a no brainer for me. When I had the 9.7 IPP I did not use the pencil as much. I had to 'get into the habit' I guess. Now it is part of my workflow.

Yeah the general release is usually better.

If You decide to purchase the 10.5 iPad, B&H Photo is highly reputable company and I have had great experiences with them.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm happy with the overall performance of the 2017 iPad, no complaints, I was just nit-picking. I just wanted to make sure my iPad would have no problems running iOS 11.

In answer to another member, no I have no need or use a pencil so you are right the IPP would be a waste. I just like a real smooth UI. Anyway, I'm following the advice of the person who suggested to wait for iOS 11 to get some of the bugs and performance issues out of the way before upgrading.

Side note, I thought I read you can customize the CC but I couldn't figure out how to rearrange and add icons to CC? I did like the new dock in iOS 11.

Because of ProMotiom the 10.5 would be much smoother than the iPad 2017. I upgraded from a iPad Air 2 and the difference is mind blowing.

Yes you are correct, I have purchased from them before although if you need to exchange an iPad if there is a problem you have to pay for return shipping so that eats away at the savings.

What is ProMotion?

What is ProMotion?
The screen of your iPad refreshes at 60hz. The screen of the iPad Pro refreshes at 120hz which means every time you scroll or do any activity the animations and speed are much much more fluid.

Ah, I see. I paid $316 buying it from Walmart, I don't know if ProMotion is worth another $233, since my iPad runs pretty smooth already. My biggest reservation buying an IPP now is that supposedly the next iPP's may get an OLED screen. That's what I'm waiting for.

I upgraded from Air 2 and like every one says, 10.5 blows it away in terms of raw performance and smoothness. However on iOS 11 DB9, there is still lag and stutter and you will nitpick on it as well. iOS 11 still needs a lot of polish in terms of UI stuttering. But it is nowhere as bad as it was in iOS 8. That was the worst turd to fly out of Cupertino.

In my opinion ProMotion isn't worth the extra money. UI transitions aren't all that different, the main time you notice ProMotion is when scrolling a web page, the text is still readable as it scrolls. The higher refresh rate makes the Pencil appear much more responsive, but as you aren't using the Pencil that's irreverent. This problem is apps need to provide support for ProMotion. Its like 3D Touch, over time more apps have taken advantage but even then most can still live without it.

iPad Pro 10.5 have a new resolution and many many apps (as Facebook also) are not yet optimizated for 10.5 and 12.9. They just scaling from 9.7 resolution with blurry text and eyes strain.

iPad 2017 is fully optimizated for all iPad apps on the App Store.
Change with 10.5 only if you need to use Apple Pencil....in my opinion.

I had 10.5 256 (839€ in Italy) for some days and return it for a 2017 iPad 128 on sale (417€! Saving moooore money).

Pro Motion is in my opinion a big step forward, especially for media playback and editing.
I would immediately buy the 10.5 but a have a first gen 12,9
Noone knows what the software can do, defining quick refresh for realtime data, AR, etc.

I have the ipad pro 10.5. I installed public beta back in July. It was laggy and buggy at times. I would chalk up your ipad's performance to the beta. My wife has the ipad 2017 and it is fast enough.

I was also debating if I should keep the 10.5 pro or go for the 2017 ipad but I already had a pencil and best buy reduced the price of the pros by $100. I was able to price match it after purchase.

I would get a 10.5 over a 2017 9.7 iPad but because it feels better but not because of a beta performance. A beta is not a polished product no matter how close to release it is. Heck, we know from past Apple releases that the v1.0 probably will be buggy. Apple usually gets it right on the v2.0 release. I'm sure the 9.7 will perform fine once iOS 11. gets there if that is your concern.

Always the Pro! Unless finance is a concern, in which case the 9.7 2017 is a great price and device

It’s worth to upgrade for the fluidity alone. The iPad 2017 is ok, but the butter-smoothness if the iPad Pro 10.5 is out of this world. Trust me.

This is so true. Plus, with iOS 11 coming out, which makes the Pro so much more functional, you’ll feel you “missed the boat” if you don’t have a Pro and you could have.

iOS 11 makes ipad 2017 more functional as well... to OP, if you dont need pencil and keyboard, save your money...

This is a big part of it. When you consider the difference in pricing between the 9.7 2017 iPad and a 10.5 iPad Pro, it's fairly significant. One just really needs to justify what they need the iPad for and if they can appreciate the Pro features.

yeah, really like advice "if money is no concern buy ...", like why would anyone ask for any advice if money was no concern:)

Even if finances wasn't a concern, one should ask themself if they can justify spending $300 or more for an iPad Pro for capabilities they may not utilize or appreciate.
