So I went all in on an iPad Pro in 2021 after wanting to try replacing my laptop with it for years. I got a 12.9” M1 iPad Pro, Magic Keyboard, and Apple Pencil 2. I managed to go iPad only for months, but, as most on these forums seem to do, I ended up going back to Mac after I found the iPad frustrating and incapable for certain tasks. Plus, there was the Apple Silicon revolution for Macs which resolved a lot of my issues with Macs.

Now, my iPad only gets used for a few hours a week. Most of that use is done on the Magic Keyboard, meaning that I’m mostly just using it as I would my MacBook Pro. I tend to pick up MacBook Pro over my iPad now because it’s just easier to do the things I want to do, even if it’s just consumption. For example, I can use Firefox on Mac with uBlock Origin, have multiple tabs and windows open, and never worry about any of the tabs reloading or crashing or the adblock not working. My MacBook Pro is better for watching movies because its display has much less blooming compared to my iPad, the screen is larger and adjustable to more angles. It’s starting to feel pretty wasteful knowing that something I spent around $1,500 for something that only gets used a few hours a week and most of its use case can be done the same on my other devices (MacBook or iPhone).

Really, the only things I think I would miss from the iPad are the portability (compared to my MacBook Pro), large touch screen, and occasional Apple Pencil use. For portability, it’s way easier to bring to places than my 16” MBP is, but I rarely bring either device out of the house anyways. The iPad is also still pretty heavy and bulky with the Magic Keyboard anyways. It’s actually pretty bulky to use as just a tablet compared to the 11” size too. Having a large touch screen is nice and feels more futuristic, fun, and immersive than a trackpad and keyboard on a laptop, but again, the 12.9” isn’t great to use as a tablet, so I tend to use it with the Magic Keyboard anyways For Apple Pencil use, I do like to make art and and do jigsaw puzzles, but that’s maybe once a month. I used to take a lot of handwritten notes, but I rarely do anymore.

Right now, it seems to make sense for me to just sell my iPad while resale values are still good. My laptop replacement experiment didn’t work. The iPad doesn’t really fit my lifestyle anymore. I don’t have enough time in the day to really use it. So what’s the problem? My fear is that in a few months from now, I’ll regret having sold it and just end up buying a new one and spending more money overall. I also absolutely hate the process of selling electronics online, and I’d have to sell three different electronics (iPad, Magic Keyboard, and Pencil) unless I did an all-in-one listing which I don’t know would work since it would look high priced compared to other similar iPads being sold. What would you do in my situation?

Also, please note that buying a different iPad really isn’t an option to me. I don’t really have an interest in any of the other iPads because I really value high contrast displays (mini-LED or OLED) and ProMotion. Also, if my whole reason for selling my iPad is because I don’t use it enough, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me to just buy a different, albeit cheaper, iPad if I’m still going to use it much (and probably would use even less since it’s not really an iPad I want anyways).

Thank you in advance for any responses and perspectives!

I did the same but in reverse. I thought i would want to go back to a mac. Tried it, then missed everything about ipad i took for granted And came back. Even the small things like being able to swipe something from the sidebar or touch a button on screen like predictive text or something. I just missed it. Going back to a MacBook for me felt antiquated.

I would say for you, put the ipad away for awhile and if you dont have the urge to bring it out. If you could just leave it in a closet and forget about it and NOT care, then sell it. I only say that because I’ve made the mistake of just figuring “oh yeah I’m done with this crap”. Sold it and missed and was like why did i just do that. You figure the grass is always greener on the other side and i realized sometimes I’m just bored in life and want to try something different

I would but then i have zero sentimental value to any electronics i own, if i don’t use it or like it i sell.
I buy and sell off Facebook market place or gumtree mostly So am used to it and know what to look for in sellers and buyers.
I did sell my 12.9” M1 and MGK after 1 year, ended up buying a 11” M1 and just got a good priced MGK for it, but then i have a 24” iMac no MacBook.
I like it gives me a tablet and a keyboard/mouse, i did find the 12.9” too big as just a tablet.

-You find the iPad isn’t good for your use case
-You value portability, but you don’t bring it out much anyway
-You grab your Mac even for arguably THE use case for iPads: content consumption
-You dislike the iPad as a tablet because it is too large, saying that you’d prefer to use it with the Magic Keyboard anyway, whilst saying at the same time that you prefer your Mac for that.
-You like it for art and puzzles, but you almost never use it for that.

I got your key points, and outlined them in a clear, succinct, bullet-point-like style.

I am seeing all cons and no pros. You don’t mention one definitive and constant thing you really like the iPad for, even going as far as to say that you even prefer the Mac for content consumption (which iPads excel at).

I only have your post to go from, of course, but what I am reading is pretty clear.

That said, I agree completely with @Ghost31 as far as my recommendation goes: store it in a drawer for one week without touching it. See how that goes, and go from there.

I shared similar experience. Interestingly, I use iPad as tablet (for reading / drawing / note taking) more frequently when I use basic case (instead of Magic Keyboard).

Edited: forgot to mention, I have 11” which may better fit to use as tablet.

Thank you for all the feedback and suggestions. I’m going to try the drawer method and see how I feel. Thanks again!

I went on a similar journey -- splurging on the 12.9 M1 iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard with the intent of it being a laptop replacement, until my purchase of the 16" M1 MacBook Pro squashed that idea. I ended up selling the MKB and buying a Smart Keyboard Folio (new, sealed for $99 on Ebay). This allowed me to return to the iPad-as-tablet aesthetic with a keyboard that's lighter and far more adaptable.

We differ in that I don't mind the size of the 12.9 and enjoy using it as a tablet. Since you do not, you might consider trying out the 11" Pro. I know you said you did not want another iPad, but you might find the lesser size, bulk and weight of the 11" makes it something you DO want to take with you while out. And using the iPad as an iPad will make it different enough from your MacBook Pro that you may discover some actual use cases for it.
