Let me start with I do trade year for phones and just got my new 15PM but for watches, I have had Series 0, then S3, then S5 which I still have and a Stainless gold S7. My daily watch is my S5 for my daily treadmill and activities. I only wear my Stainless on the weekends and special nights out. When they announced the new Series 9 on the 12 of this month I thought, I don't need a new watch. I am perfectly fine with what I have.
But many times the battery is in the red before the end of the day, yesterday it just stopped 0% battery at 6:15 pm I had only had it on since 7:30. Battery health is at 75% Yes it was updated to OS10 but had the low battery happen a lot prior to the recent updates.

Questions should I just go ahead and trade in and get a new S9, trade in is showing at $90 which is pretty good, or should I buy a reduced one with say Target? Or just try to push this one along lol?

You can get the S5 battery replaced with a new one by Apple for not a lot of money if you don’t otherwise have reason to upgrade.
Yes, that is an option although I am not sure I want to do that, The cost is $99.00, it requires sending it in and not having it for about 2 weeks. So I have paid out $99.00 and still have a series 5 watch but it would last me probably another 2 yrs or until Apple updates no longer happen due to age.

You wrote you have a S7 so being without the S5 shouldn’t be too much of a hardship

Whether it’s worth $99 to buy another two or three years use of the S5 (and upgrade the) vs the other options is something you’ll need to decide. I’d note that the S9 is the first CPU update since S6, so keep that in mind wrt support lifetime expectations

While I agree there is one drawback, I exercise daily and work out on my treadmill and refuse to use my good gold stainless for working out. I know it sounds silly but it is nice dress up watch and there have been times my arm hits my treadmill I just do not want to risk banging up the good far more expensive watch.

Put a cheap TPU case on it If you’re concerned. Or wear a terry cloth wrist band over it.

While the gold coating isn’t quite as durable as the old space black DLC coating, it’s still pretty durable. Sapphire crystal is pretty durable too. I never managed to ding my SBSS or SBTI watches despite banging them into doorways and other klutzy stuff

As I said, you’ll need to make the choice that’s right for you. My only goal was to inform.

I recently replaced my series 5 watch battery but I beat the price increase by Apple. The refurb they sent me as a replacement was pristine. I have not been tempted to upgrade at all, since the new watches don't offer any functionality improvements that are important to me. So the question might be, does the new watch series offer any functions that you currently do not have, or are slow with the 5? A related question, if you upgrade, does waiting until the BF sales make sense in 2 months?

If anything, I am disappointed by Watch os10 since it removed the weekly miles walked total from the activity summary which is something I valued. Had I known that I would not have upgrade to 10. It has tempted me to consider selling my series 5 (even with the new 100% battery health level) and upgrading to a 7 or 8 that still has Watch OS9. but a different app may give me the miles walked weekly that I am now missing with OS10

I totally agree with you with the activity update on OS10 I too miss the weekly miles walked. I do not think what they did to it was an improvement. Hoping with future updates they bring that back.

The differences between the 5 and 9 are not huge but the screen is slightly larger, the internal storage is 64GB instead of 32GB. The 9 allows for QI wireless charging where the 5 is only the old Apple Magnetic charging, the battery is slightly larger 308 mAh verses 296. There are more health sensors with Thermometer and Blood Oxygen. Then there is the new S9 chip. I will say I could care less about this Double Tap gesture thing, although may use it for hitting the snooze on the alarm 😂
Don't get me wrong I love my 5 but I would hate to spend $100 and on it and still have an older watch. How much longer will they continue to do updates for the 5? I am thinking at most 1 more year since the recent updates now only update S4 and newer. What I am surprised with is the dollar amount Apple is giving for trade for the 5, they are giving $90.00 how much longer will that last? I traded my S3 for the SS7 2 years ago and only got $50.00 for trade.
Yes, I am pretty much talking myself into a new 9, I had looked at stores still selling 7 and 8 and since there is no trade with non Apple stores, price wise still better off getting the 9 plus it is the newest version.

I upgraded to the ultra watch 2 from the s5. I cracked my screen on the watch and rather than pay $200 to fix a screen that for a watch that may not get next years update, I just moved to the new watch. The battery wasn’t the best either so I’d be paying double for that

I’ve just got series 5 to series 9 to be fair.

Hopefully £75 trade in if apple ever send me the trade in package…
