Im an android developer and been working the past few months to make a switch into ios. I already released a few apps on the app store.

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014) 16 GB ram and 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5. Lately the laptop is getting overheated and the battery is officially dead( gives me 2 hours max). Im thinking to upgrade to the new macbook pro. Im a bit confused on a few things

should I go with a 13 inch again and customize it to 2.7GHz quad‑core 8th‑generation Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz and 16 gb ram

or go with the default 15inch (2.2GHz 6-core 8th-generation Intel Core i7 processor)

Do you have issues with the CPU on your current MBPro being maxed out? Does it take a significant amount of time to compile and test apps? If so, assuming the new MBPro does it faster, how much is that really worth to you?

Both are very portable, the new 15" has a smaller footprint than the older 15", and not much larger than your 13". So if you can't tolerate any increase in size that rules out the 15".

Otherwise, it's $ vs size vs performance. I'd prioritize those three in terms of importance and go from there.

Go with a 15 inch. It sounds like you would benefit from the extra screen real estate with what you're doing (not to mention a 6 core processor and dedicated graphics card)

Yea, lately it takes me around 10-13 mins at some point to start up android studio with a heavy project if chrome/safari is running and its getting lately hot a lot and i can hear the fan running loud.

for $ the new default 15 inch would cost me 2399, on the other hand the deafult 13'inch with 2.7GHz quad‑core 8th‑generation Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz and 16 gb would cost 2299.

Obviously a 2.2gh 6-core is better than the 2.7 quad core? or am i not making the right call here

Im not sure i would benefit from the graphics card, it would consume the battery more, that's why im thinking of having another 13inch and customize it but when I did iI figured the difference is 100$ between a default 15 inch and default 13inch maxed customization ( 16gb and 2.8 quad core processor)

I think you are making the right call. As long as you're ok with the bigger footprint. I use a 13" right now and am almost certainly skipping this generation, but if I was picking up a 2018 I suspect I'd be getting the 2.2GHz 6 core 15". The footprint is a little bigger, it's a little heavier, and takes up a little more space, but it has some horsepower once those cores start running!

The exception would be if you're using single threaded apps, then the 2.7Ghz is faster than the 2.2Ghz. You'll be able to verify that now though by using Activity Monitor and checking out the discrete core performances to be sure.

im mainly using xcode/ android studio/chrome and safari/photoshop so i think i would be good with with 2.2ghz. I had a thought of actually sending my current laptop for battery replacement and cleaning( it has been 4 years and i never cleaned it from the inside) but im not sure if there would be a difference noted
