I'm currently running Big Sur 11.6 and wondering if I should upgrade to Monterey, or am I not missing out on much? My biggest concern is if there's many bugs, etc still with Monterey. Thanks, in advance!

Depends on how 'important' your Mac is to you. What i mean by that is:

Do you use it for work and you need it to be absolutely reliable and as bug free as possible? Then i would wait another update and just go with the 11.6.2 update. If you're just using it for youtube, macrumors and Spotify: go ahead.

But after the Catalina catastrophe, I have decided to wait until at least a .2 update before I go. But that is a personal experience. My dad upgraded right away from Big Sur to 12.0.1 and it has been working flawlessly for him.

If you want "bugs", run Windows 11.

Yesterday's dot update addressed a number of bug issues plus adding support for screen sharing via FaceTime

Generally, things were fine when I upgraded with ONE caveat. I noticed a drop in my Wifi speed of about 20-25%. After comparing my iPhone and M1 MBA I think it was the combo of the Intel Imac and Monterey. Wiped it clean, did a clean install of Big Sur and got back my regular Wifi Speed.

I have it downloading now...says about 12gb or so. Seems like a lot of features I'll never use but either way, it'll be up to date. It's on an m1 MacBook Pro if it makes any difference.

Seems like it went well. Only thing I notice is that maybe Apple condensed some of its icons for apps? I notice a few of the app icons are gone or rearranged maybe in the tile list. Does it look like I’m missing anything? Also, there's some weird question mark file that says install macOS Monterey in that list. Not sure if I should just delete that off?

Music production: Just a heads up: recent Apple release of Monterey 12.1 broke the drivers for Komplete Kontrol S61 & Komplete Kontrol. Not sure about anything else NI, but this one is bad - MIDI dropping in and out, KK plug locking up etc. Dreadful Apple practice re. customers & 3rd party as usual, tho' did not really expect to find this on a point update. Rolled back to macos 12.01 and everything works as it did before.

I’d wait. still really buggy and not that many useful features. You’ll notice all the bugs more than the features.

Wanted to wait until 12.3 but having issues with my Logitech keyboard and apple thought Monterey would fix the problem, so I'm upgrading as I type this. We'll see

Just upgraded to Monterey and the computer didnt blow up :)

Let's see if the Logitech problem is fixed. Otherwise, it's got to be a Logitech problem and will ask for a replacement keyboard

Upgraded to Monterey and so far so good. The computer is not sluggish and the Logitech keyboard problem I was having "seems" to have gone away (Slow typing). I'll keep my fingers crossed and keep testing

My iMac (5K, 27" late 2015( did the 12.1 Monterey update last night automatically.
Broke it badly. Almost like a new instal without carrying over the history.
No Internet accounts, no email.
No photos. Appears to have lost the library :-( 50GB of 10+years of photos.
preferences have all been lost.
No genie effect on menu bar. lost position & size.
not sure what else has gone yet.
Not a happy camper Apple

Better restore from backup! mac users are so lucky in that setting up time machine is easier than creating a macrumors account.

there have been reports of some macs with the T2 chip freezing, not starting, BRICKING! I wouldnt go near it till I hear right from the horse's mouth that that, at least, was fixed. Until then, STAY AWAY FROM *********!!!

I did hold off for a week or so; with the transition to Big Sur I waited for over 6 months for all the regularly mentioned reasons.
But – and it is on anyones own risk off course – I took the plunge going from Big Sur to Monterey and it actually went smooth as butter.
I would say: make sure you have a recent backup and go for it.

I always wait for the x.1 update for Apple to sort out the main bugs and glitches before upgrading my Mac (Macbook Pro 2016, 13'' w/ TB). I did the same this year, and so far Monterey 12.1 has been a very pleasant surprise. It feels faster than Big Sur and I have had no problems whatsoever in the past 3 days that I have been using it.

Keep in mind though that I did a clean install and then transferred all of my files manually. It takes some extra time but judging from the horror stories that I'm reading in these forums from people who simply did an upgrade, I'd say that it will save you much more time in the end !

if you use M1 chip YES. If you are on INTEL, Stick to Catalina.
That was my question. I have a feeling that even with a fairly modern quad core Intel Mac with plenty of processing power, Monterey is really designed for M1. Apple isn't really focused on Intel anymore so I doubt they are optimizing it for that platform and will probably be quiet sluggish and perform poorly.

Well, in my experience transferring to a new OS has been smooth as butter from Big Sur to Monterey and for most earlier iterations.
I think it is a bliss to be able to just work as you were in your previous system is so nice opposed to manually put everything back. Needless to say I haven’t experienced any serious bugs in the past, know that I have not coming from the first OSX ever… Thinking back I do remember some issues when third party software was not ready only finding that out after the update.
The update to Monterey did not have any issues so far, apart from FontXplorer (plugins) not being ready.

I only just noticed that the 12.1 update had dropped last Monday, I just upgraded and it seems fine so far on my 24” M1 iMac. Personally I think a x.1 upgrade is fine to go for, with a x.0 you might still run into some rare issues but most of the problems should be gone by x.1 Or at the latest x.2.
