18 month period? I'm not sure what you are referring to. The AW design and basic feature set is 24 months old right now. The Series 1 and 2 models were speed bumps and speed bump + GPS, respectively. The absence of rumors doesn't mean a true upgrade isn't near, it means there are no rumors. Apple can still keep secrets when it wants to. If Apple wants to grow AW its imperative to give Series 0 holdouts a reason to upgrade and new prospective owners a reason to be wowed over where the Series 0-2 did not. If it can get a significant # of Series 1 and 2 to upgrade that is gravy. But whatever Apple does or does not come up with will show us how serious they are about AW.

The first Gen Watch was released in April 2015, Series1/2 was 18 months after in September 2016. IF Apple releases another Watch this Fall, that's one year after the Series 1/2 update and it's likely another incremental update with LTE, which has been the main rumor (Aside from a different Touch display). There hasn't been a lack of rumors, there just has been very few.

And Watches generally don't change design all that often, and knowing how Apple isn't known to drastically revamp products on an annual basis, "Series 3" will likely be another minor update. Regardless, I think Apple is showing plenty of signs it's serious with the Watch through marketing and band refreshes. I don't think having a complete redisgn proves their serious, I think it indicates they are committed. Again, a major redesign doesn't seem likely this Fall. I believe 2018 will be the bigger changes to come.

I was going to say much the same. So far the Apple Watch has been on an 18 month refresh cycle. Well Technically 17 months. The original debuted in April 2015. Series 2 was released 17 months later in September 2016. So there is some speculation that AW3 will not appear alongside iPhone 8 late this year, but rather will be released around March or April 2018. Series 3 looks to be speed bump + LTE with a different display technology to save a bit of power, likely the power the LTE will use.

Right but we aren't talking about jewelry or fashion watches. These are electronics with built-in obsolescence. Typically fitness bands (Fitbit Charge, Garmin Vivofit) have updated 12-15 months). Popular sports watches like the Garmin Forerunner 6xx every two years -- both aesthetically and features. Some of the lower volume selling sports watches update at 3 years. Android watches like the Gear have relatively fast upgrade cycles too but then who cares about Android watches.

Of course Apple is Apple so who knows, but IMHO the AW series 0 was a beta that gradually was built up to release quality with WatchOS updates. The Series 1 gave it the chip it needed for speed, the Series 2, GPS. It's time for Apple to take the next step with software and sensors to keep sales momentum by encouraging upgrades and new sales. My assumption is they adopted the iPhone update "tick/tock" path rather than the herky jerky Mac update cycle. We'll find out soon enough.

Apple actually originally first attempted to market the first generation Apple Watch as a fashion device with the Edition model, which we saw how that ended up.

I actually perceived the Series One Apple Watch what the first generation Apple Watch should have been. Now, we are starting to see water resistance, GPS in Series 2 and perhaps an LTE option in Series 3.

But where I will agree with you, is I don't want to upgrade from my first generation/Series 2nto a Series 3 if the Watch has the same physical design. Also LTE has no interest to me and I'm ready for a complete redesign before I ultimately decide to upgrade again.

I think it's difficult to assume that LTE is/isn't worth the upgrade until one actually tries it. Sometimes you could be out for a quick errand or a stroll/run and you don't want to bring your phone with you. At the very least, people can contact you in an emergency (and vice versa). You could also read/reply texts if needed.

LTE support on the watch is not gonna replace your smartphone during a workday, and I don't think its meant to (in the near future at least). Most people won''t be browsing the web, replying emails or having phone conversations on their watches after all. But if you just need to be contactable by your loved ones by text for a short trip outdoors, then LTE support is a game changer, or at least, its nice to have that option.

Oh, and I'd probably upgrade too if Series 3 supports an Always On display. This one has little to do with functionality (though its nice to have a quick glance at the time without having to always raise your arm). I don't fancy a watch with a blank face. If bands are something that people love personalising (which many on this forum do), then an Always On display will go a long way too... I'd love being able to match watch faces with bands.

I have the SS Original Model. Zero interest in upgrading since there was nothing major changed. The resale value also sucks.

I had the original Space Black and must say to me the change to S2 SS (changed to a clear SS) made it a WAY better product. Really just a massive improvement (and I loved my S0)...

The speed, the fact that I never have to worry about water and the GPS for running is just a complete all around watch ... Really recommend it
