Although the iTunes name is so well known, it's now more than a jukebox, it's more of a media centre.

Should it get a new name to reflect that? If so, what?

And even if you say no, what would you suggest anyway?

I would love to see Apple add electronic books and maybe magazines next. The iPhone/iTouch would make a good reader and they could even add a hardware specific iReader.

iTunes is an appropriate name. Changing it would be silly, dumb and just about any other similar description.

Almost as bad as going from .Mac to mobile me :D

Battle the kindle. Yeah, that seems like a good way to go.

And about the iTunes name, I don't see a reason to change it yet, most of the other features are still somewhat secondary to the music related features.

It's pretty consistent with Apple branding so far; iwork, iphoto, itunes so no it shouldn't be changed.

I think it's fine with the current name. As said before everything Apple produces has an i so...

And it's very well known since even windows users can run it.

They might as well keep it, everyone knows what is by now.

They could do with changing the icon however - I'm surprised with a new version they didn't change the colour of it as they usual do.

I've been thinking they've needed to change it for absolutely ages. It most certainly is now a media jukebox rather than music with other stuff tacked on the side.

Although as said above the iTunes brand is both incredibly massive and sounds good - even though it has lost most of its meaning to the product it represents.

I vote no. I like the name iTunes and would probably continue calling the service that even if Apple were to decide on a new name.

Long live iTunes. :p

Definitely not, iTunes is so popularly known and changing it would be completely dumb business wise, as you would have what would probably be billions of people knowing the product as iTunes, and then it disappearing right out from under them. And it the primary focus of its library management in my eyes remains to be Music.

And even though I said no, I do not have a suggestion because I don't feel that it should be changed.

No, you don't try to re-brand such a successful brand. Now if we were talking Zune...

It seems pretty much agreed that changing the name would not be the best of choices, but I wonder how long it will be until Apple remove the CD from the icon, as iTunes moves more and more towards downloads as the primary way of adding content?

haven't we had the same icon color since iTunes 6?
but i do agree they could rework that a bit.

iTunes has a better ring to it than iMedia

not to mention i think iMedia is probably taken by another company by now.

No - even though iTunes indicates music, the name is way to well known. And even if it did get changed, people would still refer to it as 'iTunes'. Changing the name would just confuse people and it would take a long time for the new name to gain the kind of recognition iTunes has.

But, if it did have to change its name, there is nothing else I can think of that would fit. Unless it as a new word.

If we're saying no, wouldn't we be suggesting that it stay "iTunes"?

Keyword in his OP - anyway. Look it up.

Well you could still hypothetically think of names which reflect the app better. What the best name for the app is, and whether they should kill the iTunes name are different issues in my view.

Anyway, I agree it shouldn't be changed, although I do think that had Apple realised the direction iTunes would have gone it when they created it, they would have used a different name.

I do think the name is too music related for what iTunes is/does, but to kill the brand name now would probably not be the most intelligent decision.

NO.
If they did it wouldn't be until like after iTunes 10.0.0
And even then I would refer to it as iTunes and change the name of the shortcut icon back to iTunes.
