Before today, I only had a MBP for about 2 weeks last month before I returned it in anticipation of the refresh. I do not recall it making this noise. What is happening when I turn on the new one is that it makes 2 higher pitched buzzing noises immediately followed by two lower pitched grinding noises. I've shut it down and started it back up a few times to see if anything has changed, but it's the same every time. Is this normal? If not, I'll take it back to Apple tomorrow. Thanks.

Oh yeah your MacBook's grinding so hard 😀

Seriously though, the sound is completely normal. It's the optical drive doing something like starting to spin up or checking to see if there's a disc inside.

LMAO! Buzzing and grinding, oh yeah!

Thanks for the answers people. I feel much better now. phew!

If the optical drive is empty then no. If that is the case could be a bad inverter. If this is a new machine take it back & get a new one. The only sound you should hear is the fans and maybe the HD spinning.

Every slot-load drive Mac I've owned has done this.

Annoying.. I never really use the slot drive. If I disabled this and had a disc inside when I booted it, what would happen?

When there is a DVD inside.. and when I try to lift the laptop, I get some noise.

Otherwise, my MBP is so damn silent. 😛

is there any solution to this?

my MBP didnt do it the first time i switched it on but now it does!

There is no "solution" to this as it isn't a problem, it's just the optical drive checking for a disk, nothing more.

It probably did do it the first time you booted it up, you probably just didn't notice.
