The iPad is currently designed first and foremost with the portrait orientation in mind. Just look at the position of all the various external components. In that respect a 16:9 screen would be narrower, not wider. And the experience when reading magazines, documents, and comics would significantly suffer as a result.

Basically changing the screen ratio would shift the whole emphasis of the device.

I posted about this a few weeks ago but no I can't see it.

It would end up being longer too. I think they will just make the Ipad 4 a bit thinner.

I agree. I think of tablets as digital paper. Instead of seeing it as reinventing the PC, see it as reinventing paper.

Hear hear! As someone who doesn't watch movies all day on their iPad, I'm a big fan of portrait orientation. Much more like a piece of paper.

I will dislike this ratio for the iPhone, but will hate it more for the iPad. Any thoughts on what the screen ratio will be of the iPad moving forward? I just don't get a longer screen...

As a entertainment / gaming device - YES.

It's not going to change. The iPhone's resolution only changed because it increased in size, and that's not going to happen on the iPad.

Personally, I feel a 16:9 iPad would only be a real benefit to those using it for movie viewing. Most other productivity apps will not benefit this ratio. Movie and video editing may also benefit due to the tools being on the side while the image is in a larger aspect

Would I get one? Probably. But I don't think they need to change the ratio anytime soon.

So which make will you switch to then, or wil you simply never buy any tablet ever again?

Or perhaps, more lightly when you see a 16:10 iPad and how they have adapted iOS to take advantage of the extra space you will go, wow amazing, I must have one.

Just a thought :)

I will NEVER buy any 16:9 tablet. I own both iOS and Android tablets and everyone of them is not 16:9 and I will make sure it stays that way. I do own 16:10 format tablets and they're OK although I prefer Apple's 4:3 format the BEST. I have 1280x800 and it's OK but not as good as Apple's format.

A new iPad could have a smaller bezel in the same footprint to print more viewing area.

think long and hard about why they went 16:9 for the phone and that will give some insight to whether our they would do it for iPad.

Hint: that wanted to keep the size of the phone minimal.
