Should you power off while in a backpack?

Ive always wondered this i usually just close the lid when i go to school and leave it on. Any downside in doing this?

You're not supposed to do this often, or for extended periods of time as it wears out the batter faster.

That's perfectly fine. The Mac goes to sleep (and eventually deep sleep) when the lid is closed and produces no heat.

Don't worry about it. When you close the lid it'll sleep. I've left my Mac sleeping in a backpack for days at a time.

Where are you getting this? Sounds like the same "battery tip" misinformation that has been spread for years due to a lack of understanding on how lithium ion batteries actually function.

I've been doing it for years and never had any issues.

It is completely irrelevant if you turn your MBP off or just close the lid when carrying it in a backpack. It's basically down to your personal taste.

Heat certainly is bad for a lithium ion battery, but a properly functioning portable Mac will sleep when closed and there will be no heat issue to worry about.
