I leave them there and just use Exposé when I need them. Exposé helped eliminate the need of minimizing for me.

This. I either leave everything open, or use cmd+h to hide something I know I won't be using in a while.

Exposé is great. Screw minimizing windows.

I realize that some people might have different workflows than mine.

This sounds like FCPX all over again. I am guessing many who are complaining hated on Expose and Spaces when they came out as well.

Maybe some need some required reading.....

Don't think not being able to see minimized windows is a problem. In fact, if you have friends who have been using Macs for more than 5 years, you'll notice they don't usually minimize, but instead use Hide and Exposé.

I have been using Mac since Macintosh 512Ke back in 1985, which would be about 26 years. I use the minimize feature all the time and I also miss a way of handling the minimized windows in Lion.

Everyone has a different way of using their Macs. The point here is that Apple removed half of a feature (see minimized windows) while leaving the rest of the feature (minimize). Lion is great, but is full of inconsistencies I haven't seen since the old MacOS days.

Apple did not forget about minimized windows; the just made a stupid decision not to include the in mission control hopefully they will be there with the next update.

For now the solution to the minimized window problem is:

right click (control click) on the application window --> Show all windows

you can now see all the windows (including minimized) for the application

clicking on any open application icon in the dock will take you to the "show all windows" view for that app.

Not everyone want to use gestures

This is getting patently ridiculous. "Minimized" Mission Control windows can be easily expanded through gestures, and each of them can be "maximized" pressing the space bar. If some people don't want to learn the relevant gestures and keystrokes, it's entirely their problem, not Lion's, and their whining is nonsensical, but amusing.

I don't use gestures because I got sick and tired of my so called Magic Mouse constantly loosing its Bluetooth connection so I reverted to a Logitech Wireless USB mouse. Gestures are like a lot of Lion seems to be, an attempt to make the Mac interface match the iPhone. I don't want or need an iPhone and I don't want or need gestures. I just need to be able to access functionality with reasonable mouse clicks.

you could always UNCHECK the "Minimize windows into application icon" in dock preferences and manage your windows pre-leopard style

For those that are saying that Apple "forgot" to include minimized windows, I'd be surprised if this were the case. It was a design decision they made to to encourage users to navigate in a particular way. The same way they added natural scrolling and defaulted to remove the lights under running apps on the dock. Thankfully for those two new features they gave us the option of reverting to our old ways.

Natural scrolling was justified by the fact that with a touchpad you are moving (or touching) the content. The lack of dock lights is justified by stating that it shouldn't matter if an app is running or not, if you want to use it, click it. At this point computers are smart enough to manage their resources and the user doesn't have to worry.

As for the lack of minimized windows in MC, I think Apple's intent is for us to no longer minimize windows. Just let them run, let MC quickly organize everything by app for you, and then use the opposing gesture to isolate windows for a given app.

I was wondering what Mission Control was missing.. now I know! Hopefully Apple eventually adds an option to be able to see minimized windows in Mission Control. Until then, I've made the minimized windows show up in my dock. That seems to be the only way around it. Otherwise, when I minimize windows, I easily forget which window or app that I minimized.. whoops!

Temporary solution

Thanks for the temporary solution. It should have occurred to me. I see that this was only your second post. Too many people here are jaded fanboys. A positive attitude is a bit of fresh air.

I still think the Magic Mouse is a poor peripheral but I am considering buying the trackpad.

minimize windows

To go back to snow leopard type behaviour - go to system -> dock -> uncheck minimize windows into application icon.

Two finger double tap on the app icon in the Dock and you'll see the minimized windows for that app.

It's two fingers using a Magic Mouse. Not sure how many digits are required if you use the Magic Trackpad.

Hope this helps.

I, too, was frustrated by the lack of minimized screens. However, enabling App Expose in System->Trackpad made minimized screens viewable with a three finger down swipe.

Now I can just three finger swipe up for MC or down for App Expose - with minimized windows.

First time posting - so sorry if this is obvious.

Aha! This is the solution I was looking for, or at least, it brings back a touch of the old Snow Leopard Expose functionality to Lion if not quite the full control. It only seems to give you an Expose-style overview of the current application that is open with it's minimised windows. You still need to 3-finger scroll into Mission Control to see the other apps that may have minimised windows
