I remember in earlier incarnations of Panther, they considered external hard drives different from cds, disk images and ipods.

Is there any way to change it so that I can display those while excluding my external drives on the desktop?

Select Finder and go to Preferences. (Cmd + ,)

In Finder's preferences there are options to control what drive types are shown on the desktop.

the problem is my ext. hds are under the "cds, dvds, and ipod" selection. so if i kill my hard drives, I kill all the other stuff that i'm trying to keep.

Maybe you could include a shortcut to your external in your dock?

Actually you should be able to keep the icons off of your desktop but they should still show up in your side bar.
