lol .... speaking of hurting, I'm guessing I'm in a minority of 1, but has anyone else tried running a screen in portrait mode and find themselves getting headaches ? I can't believe it happens and have tried several times (it'd be better for the info on my second display) but it's almost as if refresh rates change or something (which I know does give me headaches if sub 60Hz, certainly on a CRT (if any of you remember that far back 😛 )). My current second screen doesn't give a refresh rate options in Preferences in either portrait or landscape so I'm assuming it's set at 60Hz, but I don't get headaches when it's in landscape mode.

I usually have my secondary monitor set to vertical orientation because I do a lot of writing and the whole Word document fits and flows quite nicely. PDFs too.

Hmm, I wonder if the brightness of the monitor is partially a cause, too...

Could be. . .the impact of the brightness is related to the surrounding lighting in your environment. My monitors are calibrated and profiled as my primary requirements involve fine printing and that necessitates fairly dimly illuminated screens.

Made a couple of changes. Got rid of my mouse for now. Like the cleaner look without it.

I bought the rubber feet from Amazon. 20mm x 2mm (24 pieces) seemed to fit perfectly. I used 6 of them on the bottom inside the outer edge of the round ring:

On the MiniStack, I am using a 2TB Crucial MX500 2.5" SATA SSD and a 2TB Inland Performance Gen4 NVMe. They are both limited to 1 lane, but the speeds are still decent and the NVMe is still getting good IOPS on random 4K read / write, which for me is the most important. I am using the same 2TB Inland Performance NVMe in an external OWC Envoy Express enclosure (limited to 2 lanes), directly attached to the Mac Studio, as my boot drive which is also working out great.

I ran these speed tests right after installing both of the drives and kept the screenshots.

I could get twice the speed of the Envoy Express if I switched to a different external enclosure, but honestly I couldn't tell the difference unless transferring very large files - and having the NVMe run faster would only cause it to run hotter. The drive, despite being a Gen4 in a case with no fan, is running pretty cool at around 35 to 40 degrees since its speed is limited.

A humble but simple setup. I switched out the black keyboard for a white touchID one as I prefer sticking with the white theme. Only further changes I'll make are to get a stand for the display (it's about 5-8 cm too low) and I'm also considering getting another display once they're available at retail Apple stores.

I'm considering a Gen 4 SSD in a Gen 3 enclosure connected to Mac Studio Thunderbolt 3/4, and knowing that this means less Gen 4 heat is helpful.

Nice desk. What's the manufacturer? How do you like it? Pros and cons? I'm looking at getting an electric standing desk but am a little overwhelmed at the options.

Thanks. I live in China so I bought it from Alibaba (Taboo). The brand is called Senlon. I got the S1 model with the more powerful motor. Dimensions are 1200mm x 600mm. I'm super happy with the desk and it's ability to smoothly go up and down. It's really solid too so the desk doesn't move at all. I paid CNY1132 which is about US$180. Here's a link if it helps.

That appears to be the battle tested "abandon-in-place-and-install-new" cable management system. I've been using it in my equipment room for years.

When the recycle price for copper hits $1000 per pound, I'm going to be a zillionaire.

Slightly, but not quite as badly as you'd think. Biggest problem is mains sockets, the desk has 7 screwed onto the back side but space doesn't allow access without stripping the whole desk down and lifting it out (it doesn't slide), so some of them have power packs plugged in for devices no longer in existence. It's not helped by my 2 UPS's being on a shelf out of shot to the right (hence the mains leads hanging off the desk). Data cable wise, they're all in use (4x HDMI/KVM cables, the KVM itself is under/behind the second screen, 8x CAT6 leads, USB-C dock, a few USB3 leads, audio, TB3 disk enclosure etc etc.

At least now with Studio in place, the Mac Pro can come out, UPSs can go up there ... think it's probably time for the strip down to happen.

Or maybe just get an extension added to the garden shed so I've got more than 5ft x 4ft to cram everything into (including me) 🤫
