Well, I must confess my lack of care with my oldest MBP from 2009, since I've another one for school, work or whatever I judge as important, I really don't worry too much on the older MBP, so I've basically put it under extreme circumstances a lot of times. Some times it has been at 90%+ throttle for a hole day while transcoding some videos, other times it have fallen from the desk (not on purpose), and even once from the stairs (not on purpose, again), I've played some of my favorites games on high specs overclocking the GPU, and yes a couple of times I've take it to the shower to keep listening whatever I was listening.
Every month or two I open it, clean it completely, outside and inside, and it have resisted wonderfully. I'm really impressed of all the abuse it can take, perhaps the regular maintenance helps, but...I certainly don't think it's the intended use for a laptop, however I've enjoyed this MPB a lot, rather than worrying about keeping it as new I focus on doing what I intend to, and it hasn't failed me.
I will emphasize in what I said: it's not the intended use for a machine like this , I'm not saying you should treat it this way, I just want you to know the kind of quality hardware you have, sometimes there is no need to worry that much...just don't make a habit out of it...water is kryptonite for electronics.
