Showing file extensions question

I have my Mac setup to show file extensions, but I only really want to see the extensions for media files, like images, movies and music. Is there any way to hide extensions for applications on the Desktop? Currently I'm seeing filename.app for my program shortcuts, which I don't want to.

Is this possible?
 
It's all or nothing. You could add the "kind" column to get this kind of information, though.
