The current 5.8” size iPhone X, Xs, 11 Pro seems to be a good size without being too big. If you want bigger you can go to a bigger but not crazy 6.5” size. However if Ming chi kuo is right (and he pretty much always is) the new sizes for iPhone 12 Pro will be a too small 5.4” and a crazy big 6.7”.
The model in the middle will be the regular iPhone 12. Not great though if you want a pro.

Customer : “I’d like to buy an iPhone 12 Pro please”
Apple : “certainly which size did you want, unappealing small or more expensive and way to big to hold?”

It doesn’t make sense to me either. But given how early that rumour surfaced, it may not be accurate. With all three models having OLED, they’d have to seriously step up the feature list for the Pro models to justify the price jump.

Personally, I’d like to see them offer all three sizes in iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro flavours. But that would create a very crowded lineup.

A "too small" 5.4" iPhone will be a perfect companion for Apple Glasses.

In short,
  • iPhone 5G - mainstream users
  • iPhone 5G Pro - Apple Glasses users
  • iPhone 5G Pro Max - Traditional phablet users

Most people don't seem to be taking into consideration the new usage model. iPhone won't go to 12, 13, 14... following the same usage model. Apple has building the AR foundation for years, and it isn't just for Pokemon Go.

If the 5.4 is true, I’ll be the first in line.

It may be a bad idea for you, but there is a hole market out there for compact powerful devices.

If the 6.1 gets an OLED panel and has all the features, I think it’s the perfect strategy. 3 phones for all tastes.

If a small iPhone with flagship specs existed, I’d buy it right now. The 5.8” X-series design (and honestly the 4.7” 6-8 series before it) has always been right on the border of “too big” for me. I have an iPad for when I want a big screen. I really want a phone that is, well, phone sized. I hope the 5.4” model ends up materializing next year. I’ll buy it for sure.

The rumor came out in summer 2019, which is considered late.

Manufacturers need time to build capacity. They need 2-3 years to build a new fab and about half that time to reconfigure an existing plant to supply Apple. The design specs that Apple gave to LGD and BOE for supplying 2020 iPhones were likely locked in by the beginning of 2019.

I feel the same way as the OP.

I was thinking of going to the max 6.5 next year. The Max 6.5 is already sort of big for me but I do a lot of streaming and a bigger screen would be awesome.

However if the max next year is going to be 6.7 that’s going to be just a little bit too big for me more than I thought.

If the 5.8 high end model is going to be a 5.4 than that’s gonna be too small, I’m already complaining about 5.8 X I have.

So I am heavily contemplating of making a move this year rather than wait to next year when I originally was thinking on doing and get myself an 11 Pro Max that I know for sure is going to be a 6.5 screen.

I’ll be damned if I’m going to get an inferior Lowe end model missing 5G at 6.1 size just because I want that size.

I was just hoping to hold onto my X for one more year.

This rumor has me bummed for the future.

I really hope it’s going to be the low-end model without 5G at 5.4 and the higher end model at 6.1 pro and the max at 6.7. That would make more sense.

FYI 5.4“ at the aspect ratio of the x, xs, 11 full screen devices would be a narrower screen than an iPhone 6

As long as nextbyears iphone has 5G snd an oled screen I’ll be happy, well 5G at least, my Iphone 6 is not gering ios updates any more so than neans time to change (it should realy have been this year but I refuse to change iphone 2 years in a row, snd as I pkan on keeoung the new one at keast 4 years waiting that long for 5G is not an option either)

Even if the new phones support 5G, most of us won’t have access ( in the U.S.) to it on a regular basis for several more years.

So true.

At least current 2019 phones have Wifi 6 support which I find more relevant now.

This was probably the last year for LCD panels, and not that LCD is inferior technology, but Apple has enough appropriate suppliers now that can generate OLED panels for three iPhones. The main stream thing being, is the price point, Apple actually reduced the price this year by $50, so I’m not sure how that will offset if they decide to use OLED for the 6.1 iPhone, not to mention, OLED is really more of a ‘stopgap’ in place for micro LED to be the future of displays.

Use the X/XS Retina display rather than Retina XDR on this year's pro on the entry level model next year.

Pros will then also get 90Hz refresh rate. That way, they can get from two suppliers instead of one.

Japan Display is supplying the Liquid Retina Apple's using right now for LCD iPhones, they might be able to finally get an acceptable yield on Super Retina OLED next year. Apple invested a lot on that company and it's a shame if they're relegated to only producing iPad displays.

I'm down with a 5.4" display tbh. It helps bring SE form factor into the iPhone mainline.

I don’t doubt that the sizes are correct, but what could be wrong (or, I’m hoping is wrong) is the interpretation of which sizes correspond to which model. It could just be my own opinion colouring things but I really can’t see the sense of the Pro only being available at the two extremes of the size scale.

thanks for the info about 5.4 inch iPhone 12. Going to return 11 pro max soon because of your post. I need small size iPhone with edge to edge screen just like in current iPhones but in smaller size.

Exactly my thoughts that I mentioned in an earlier thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/2020-iphone-lineup.2197923/

In short, to me it seems more likely that the 5.8” and 6.5” Pro sizes are both creeping up to 6.1” and 6.7”, especially when you consider that the XS Max significantly outsold the XS. The 5.4” is a new “regular” model that will attract buyers still holding onto a 6/7/8 as it will be the same width as those models. Differentiating by size also offers a very tangible difference (and a cost saving) between the 12 and the 12 Pro now that LCD vs OLED isn’t going to be a factor.

Even though I have huge hands, my body is ready for that 5.4.
