iPod Shuffle auto compress?

When the original shuffle is connected, iTunes could compress your songs into AAC 128kbps automatically before adding it into the shuffle if the songs were ALAC, AIFF etc. Do the new generation Shuffles have the same function enabled?

Um, wrong. They do still support autocompression, but the supported formats, per the Tech Specs page, are:

MP3 (8 to 320 Kbps)
MP3 VBR
AAC (8 to 320 Kbps)
Protected AAC (from iTunes Store, M4A, M4B, M4P)
Audible (formats 2, 3 and 4)
WAV
AIFF

No worries. Their advertised song count does assume 128kbps AAC, which can be confusing.

I think what he means is when you connect with itunes, there is only one option in shuffle window box. it's 128. of course, accroding to SPEC, you can convert to several different formats, too.🙂

To answer your question: yes they do have the auto compress.

I use it all the time because most of my music is lossless (one of the few unsupported formats).

Cool, thanks. I use ALAC for my CDs, too, so this is great news for me. I guess now I just need to pick a color and drop a hint to my wife for Valentine's day. 🙂
