iPod Shuffle not Shuffling...

iPod shuffle problem - plug it in, it flashes orange (do not disconnect), but won't show up. I've tried to reset the thing, and restore, but the iPod Software Updater just says "waiting for the ipod to become ready".

is there any way to sort this or will i have to mess about phoning apple?

Sounds suspiciously like the Flashing Orange Light of Death. If it's still under warranty take it in for a check up/replacement. Mine did the same thing a month back.
