Shutdown Issue

When selecting shutdown from the apple menu, I get the login screen (but not always) instead of shutting down.

So, I select shutdown from the login screen.

Applecare's generic advice: reinstall the OS -- which I haven't done yet.

Thoughts on why this is happening and how to fix it.
