We shut down all the computers (and the networked printer) every evening before bed. It's just personal preference really. Well, apart from the printer, because that likes to do some sort of cleaning routine that's loud enough to wake you up should it do it in the middle of the night. With 2 toddlers in the house, we'd rather not wake them up ;)

Sleep works just as well though, don't worry about it.

I keep mine in sleep mode 99% of the time. Only when I travel do I shut it down. Since there's no hard drive in the computer, I'm not risking a hard drive crash but if the computer wakes up inside its case while traveling, I don't want to cook it to death.

I've had laptops wakeup before inside the case while traveling/commuting and given the price of the rMBP, I do not want to take a chance.

I think I am too set in my ways to just let my laptop sleep when I'm asleep, but it's good to know that there is very little difference. Thanks for all your replies!

EDIT: I just had to go on my Dell laptop for something and the start up time between that and this is astounding (a few minutes versus a few seconds)! AND my Mac remembers what I had open. I love this thing.

I shut my mid 2007 MBP down when I am sleeping…I hate to stay awake thinking about logic board might be fried or won't be able to boot up…I am referring to nVidia 8600m GT

Ahh gawd I believe that is the graphics card in my Dell! Never again!

In the past I've gone weeks, maybe even months without shutting down. I usually only do it if I'm required to like after major installs, if the batteries dies, or if I run in to some majorly long beach ball of doom moments (an issue I had with iTunes and my old 2007 black MB).

You've had that happen to you with a MacBook in spite of the magnetic lid? Wow, I haven't but I'll definitely have to think about that next time I pack for a trip.

It depends. If I'm DEAD SERIOUS about battery life at the moment, it's going to shutdown. But if it's just a visit to Starbucks, it's sleep.

They should make uTorrent compatible with Power Nap.

Mine do, I think? I just awoke from sleep, and I am still connected to the external drive on my network...

I shut mine down every night. It's one of the last things I do before bed. I guess it's a habit left over from when I was using Windows. Plus my dad told me that if you shut down a computer at night it's always faster in the morning and works better than when it's left on all night. Don't know how true that really is though.

The same applies to Windows. The only difference is that Windows has more frequent updates and they can be quite annoying with "Pleeeeasse let me restart, pleez, pleez." Every 4 hours.

My dad's Windows laptops are like that. He had another load of updates the other day. Is Windows really that full of holes that they need to patch it up so much?

I've got some beside me at the moment :D

All of this talk is making me sleepy. :)

I've been tired all day. Haven't been sleeping well in the heat and I was woken up rather early this morning by some muppet making noise outside my window  I might go to bed soon.
