Explore lost civilizations, undersea kingdoms, prehistoric jungles, and lands beyond imagination in side-scrolling adventure game "Little Orpheus," this week's addition to Apple Arcade on the iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and Mac. The game hails from award-winning game development studio The Chinese Room, part of Sumo Digital.

From the App Store description:
Little Orpheus is a technicolor side-scrolling adventure game inspired by classic movies like Flash Gordon, Sinbad and The Land that Time Forgot. Delivered in eight bite-size, commute-friendly episodes, Little Orpheus is simple enough for casual players but rich enough for seasoned adventure fans.

If you’re a fan of old school family blockbusters, want a rollercoaster story that'll take you to the Earth’s core and beyond, or are just in some need of ideologically correct entertainment, join the most unlikely hero to hit Apple Arcade on an adventure beyond belief. With stunning visuals, brilliant acting and a world-class score, Little Orpheus is a pocket-epic you'll never forget.
"Little Orpheus" is available on the App Store with an Apple Arcade subscription. The service provides iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and Mac users with access to over 100 games with no in-app purchases or ads for $4.99 per month.

I wish Apple Arcade games are sandboxed into a special folder (sort of like Newsstand) with a separate Optimize Storage setting similar to the Music app. With new titles coming out all the time, I don't want to actively worry about storage space.

At the same time, Offload Unused Apps is too far reaching. I don't want my non-game apps deleted simply because I haven't used them in awhile.

Thank you for the Trine recommendation swingerofbirch! Any other side scrolling game you'd recommend?

That's the best looking side scrolling game I've ever seen.

Yep... I think Apple and these cloud services do this "only in the cloud" on purpose, because they want paid customers...

I would pay for this if it was standard iOS app, but i wouldn't for Apple Arcade. I think cost is the only reason, because graphically you can definatl do this...where there are plenty of iOS apps ut there that a xBox like anyway. It's all abut bringing in users.

It’s a shame that console and PC users have no problem paying $60+ for games but ask a mobile user to pay $10-$20 for a game and everyone loses their mind.

It’s no wonder that mobile app stores are riddled with in app purchases. They’re catering to a market that wants everything for free. It’s the same problem news sources are having.

I appreciate what Apple is attempting with Arcade, but the damage was done when the first mobile games were free or $1. The market was conditioned at that point.

I'm not sure why you're bringing this up in this particular thread.

I'd be happy to pay $10 for this game, but they won't let me.

The games I’ve bought for my Playstation will be playable as long as I have my Playstation. Some games for iOS will stop working if I update my phone unless the developers update the app to support the new OS. Some games just disappear with no notice. 🤷‍♂️ That makes $10-$20 a hard sell, for me at least.

Why not talk about the reason for the downward spiral of mobile gaming in a thread about mobile gaming? I agree that most people don't want to rent games the same way they rent their music these days. You and I are the small minority of people who would pay good money for a mobile game. Probably around the number of people who paid for Super Mario Run. That flopped and look what Dr. Mario became.

Nobody is making you trade/sell in your old phone when you get a new one just like nobody made people trade in/sell their PS3 when they bought a PS4.

I suppose Apple is to blame for removing the ability to manage apps offline in iTunes to mitigate risk of developers removing apps from app stores. That potential issue is less than a year old though, and the mobile game industry had already locked itself into in app purchases and free to play long before that. Had $10 games been commonplace, you can bet that concern would be mitigated by Apple.

"I would have happily paid $10 for it" is what they could write on the gravestone of the 'pay-once' gaming model for mobile. You* had ten years to happily pay for it, but you didn't.

*Not you personally, just iOS gamers in general
