Sidecar - Has anyone got it working?

Good news, with beta 2 it started working with my late 2012 Macbook Air and iPad Pro 10.5, though only via usb cable 🙂

With an IntelHD4000 Sidecar is working ? Weird, but I guess your recent iPad Pro helped in this, there are two Airsync requirements for Sidecar, HEVC GPU or USB-type-C cable, that iPad Air2 and mini 4 lacking.

Just a curiosity do you updated also your iPadOS 13 to beta2 or still on beta1 ?

It’s running great on both my iMac 27” 5K and MacBook 12” Retina in combination with my iPad Pro 11” running iPadOS Beta 2. Even via WiFi it’s running very very smooth.

That video (as does the reddit thread) confirms the quality is quite bad when using an unsupported Mac. Plus, it's buggier.

I don't usually bother with iOS betas, but this time I'll make an exception and install iPadOS 13 Public Beta on my Air 2. Curious if Sidecar will work on this iPad, since I seem to have the oldest iPadOS iPad and oldest CPU-HEVC-capable Mac (Late 2015 iMac), but theoretically I should be able to use Sidecar at full quality.

Some of the iPad models mentioned by others in this thread don't have a USB-C connector, and Apple still sells models without it, so I don't think that will be an issue.

It works (oddly wasn't able to connect until I renamed the iPad Air 2) but performance isn't great on a Mid 2012 Retina MacBook Pro (not CPU-HEVC-capable). Seems to be using the Intel HD Graphics 4000 to drive the iPad display, hopefully graphics switching on the iPad display will be worked out eventually. Quality isn't perfect but usable.

The pressure sensitivity is way off on my MBP 2016 and iPad Pro 2018 - I have to press the pencil really hard to get a thicker line in Photoshop, CSP or Zbrush than on Wacom or in Astropad. It's not that the Pencil is not responsive - you can lightly tap on interface elements and they work, but the pressure curve is off (when I adjust it in CSP, it seems ok, but Photoshop doesn't have that option).

Anyone else has this issue?

I’ve used both the wireless connection and usb-c. Both work. The only difference is performance.

Anything you had to do special to get wireless to work? I keep getting "Cannot connect to iPad - the device timed out."

I'm still wondering if the iPad Air 2 is using hardware HEVC decode or not.

I have a 2016 MacBook Pro i7-6660u (Sky lake) and it’s working via usb-c to my iPad Pro 12.9 , but no wireless option. So my gut says it should work. I specially when the 4K iMac 2017 has a RM555 gfx card?

Yes, the one time I tried pressure sensitivity so far it did seem to need far too much pressure for a thick line.

But something like the correct pressure curve is hopefully something that will be tweaked during betas.

I used sidecar a few times with my 2016 Retina MacBook, and my 1st-gen iPad Pro 9.7. It worked pretty well, with impressively low lag. Also, my Mac could initiate using it as an Air Display even if the iPad was locked.. (though pressing the home button immediately prompted for a pin/touch id).

I have the 2017 MacBook Core m3 and 2017 iPad Pro 10.5". Both officially support Sidecar.

With Public Beta 1 on both machines, sometimes I can see the iPad Pro for Sidecar, but can't connect to it.
With Public Beta 2 on both machines, sometimes I can see the iPad Pro for Sidecar, but can't connect to it.

If I pair the machines via Bluetooth, but using only WiFi connecting via cellular through my phone for my iCloud login, I can't even see the iPad Pro for Sidecar. It seems the best I can get is with a wired Lightning connection, but all that does is give me the Sidecar icon. When I try to connect, it just times out. Not sure why trying to connect Sidecar is so complicated. I would have thought physically plugging in the iPad Pro would make Sidecar a simple process, but no such luck.

Anyhow, here's hoping for iPadOS 13 PB3 and macOS 10.15 Catalina PB3.

I remember it stopped working for me when I had dp1 on Mac and dp2 on iPad, but resumed when both were dp2. I think both betas need to be the same number for it to work. And I think a new Catalina beta just came out last night (not home atm so not sure) and we’re still waiting for iPadOS latest beta.

Sidecar has never worked for me. I have both a supported MacBook 2017 and a supported iPad Pro 10.5".

I tried when both were on PB1, and then I tried again with both on PB2. I can see the iPad Pro on the MacBook, but I can never connect to, whether I use wired, WiFi, or Bluetooth.

That is strange. Workes quite reliably for me (MBP 15” 2016 and iPad Pro 12.9” 2018). I do believe it will work for you when they iron out all the bugs.
