I’m feeling this way right now. I just really enjoy my X and I don’t see what could make me want to upgrade so soon. Something magic in the camera, ProMotion, or Apple Pencil support might temp me.

I realised last year that I had reached peak iPhone. That new models were almost in Emperor’s New Clothes territory.

I currently have an iPhone 8. How could a new iPhone possibly be so much better that it’s worth the big financial hit of “upgrading” ?

I had an iPhone X for a month and didn’t love it, so I tried the 8, which I do love. I had the 6+, 6S+ and 7+ but mostly prefer the lighter weight of the regular size.

I’m really trying to wean myself off upgrade addiction and I hope I will do so this year.

Not really..!

I almost upgraded every two- three years
: iPhone 3GS
: iPhone 5
: iPhone 7
: next maybe in 2019

I owned every iPhone except for the 5 and the X. I'll be skipping this years iPhone because I bought the S9+ in June and the Note 9 on Wednesday. No reason to buy an iPhone this year plus, I don't like where the iPhone is headed.

Which 11 iPhones?

Apple launched 18 major models since 2007.

The Xmas (Xmax) is shaping up to be a nice upgrade for all those 6 plus owners still holding out. But nah, upgrading an iPhone every year is a waste of money nowadays.

Just a guess, but I’m assuming OP means the following 11:

2G
3G
3GS
4
4S
5
5S
6 or 6+
6S or 6S+
7 or 7+
8, 8+, or X

So 11 phones, 10 upgrades

Don’t think OP is including 5C or SE, which added to the above list would equal the 18 total you’re talking about.

Edit: Well I was close! I see the OP was in fact including the 5C & SE as upgrade options during their corresponding release years.

My iPhone X in combination with iOS12 (beta) is imho a nearly perfect (sized) iPhone.

6,1 and 6,5 inch is completely out of my league, way way to big for me. No ergonomics in any way for me and I don't even have small hands/fingers.

So Apple really needs to come up with something really special/unique with the Xs (5,8 inch) before I pull the trigger, and I truly think that chance is about 25%.

This would be the first time I would skip a new iPhone in 7 years, I used to get a new one every year.

I skipped all the Apple Watches so far, this could be the first time I would get an Apple Watch. Let's see what Series 4 will bring, the rumours so far do sound very promissing.

Generation 9, 2015: iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus
Generation 10, 2016: iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone SE
Generation 11, 2017: iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X

Do most people consider iPhone 8 and X to be the same generation of phone?

The SE and iPhone 7?

So this is a 'no' thread.

But it can't just be a no thread can it? No, it has to be: 'Yes for all of human history, but no now'

(perhaps in reality, you're just short on funds?) :D

Meh. What’s it going to do that my 8 Plus won’t?
Find out in 4 days. A refresh from the same dated design 4 years running is one incentive for me. OLED another. Any improvements to the camera another. Fact I have the cash lying around makes it all a moot point. I want, therefore i shall receive. Enjoy your 8 Plus. It’s a decent phone.

If the new design or OLED display mattered to me I would have gotten the X in the first place. Faster performance and a better camera? Same thing every year. It’s reached a point where I can’t see much of a difference in the pictures from one year’s phone to the next, and it doesn’t matter if an app launches in 0.8 seconds or 0.6. The 8 Plus is more than decent, and I don’t see a need to replace a high end phone in just one year other than just wanting to know that I have the newest phone, and again, if I cared about that I would have gotten the X.

Anyway, that’s just me.

I have owned the original iPhone, 3g iPhone, iPhone 5, iPhone 6+, iPhone 7+ and iPhone X. I will be upgrading to the X+.

The same reasons that made you upgrade in the past? Lol.

Faster performance, better battery, Face ID 2?, ProMotion?, better cellular, better water resistance, better camera...

The list goes on. I’m sure there will be several compelling enhancements.

Being a huge Apple fanboi, I can't believe that for the first time in human history, I'm not buying a new iPhone this year!

Are you like me?

Share your feelings in this thread!

I am always bewildered the amount of duplicated threads this time of year. Anyways, this has nothing to do with being an ‘Apple fanboy’, its a matter to do with what the user finds compelling to want upgrade, also make their decision based off what they see from the keynote and if it’s worth their money.

Nevertheless, it’ll still be the best iPhone ever made. For the first time in human history I’m responding to this post.

Since nobody that has replied has fit the OPs description (owned every generation of iPhone), I guess I'll chime in.
I've had:
1. Original iPhone
2. iPhone 3G
3. iPhone 4s
4. iPhone 5s
5. iPhone 6
6. iPhone 6 plus
7. iPhone SE
8. iPhone 7
9. iPhone 8 plus
10. iPhone X. (my tenth iPhone is the X(10), pretty funny)

I have no interest in upgrading to any of the new iPhones. The X is the cats a$$ for me. I'll keep for at least another year, if not more.

I have the X too and I’m on the fence about upgrading this year. The only one I’d get is the 5.8” X anyway since the Plus will be too big and the 9 will be a downgrade.. I guess we’ll wait and see what new features come with it but if it’s nothing too extravagant, I might hold off on it this year since I spent an arm and a leg on the X.

That’s absolutely fair. However you asked what the new phone could do that your 8 Plus can’t. I simply replied with examples. Had you asked what the new phone could do that would render your 8 Plus as no good, or blow the doors off of it, that would have warranted an entirely different answer. I’m not expecting anything major either and I also have used an 8 Plus the last year. I didn’t like the size of X. But if a larger screen is offered, with a better processor, improved camera, better Face ID, etc, no matter how incremental, they’ll still be things that improve on both the X and 8 series. For many that’s not enough to warrant an upgrade. I understand.
