I've been working in Sierra for the last several years, just now getting into Catalina. I've been starting and restarting my spare MacBook Pro repeatedly the last week as I'm learning. Just today I started getting a message on startup:

Sign In to iMessage
The password for "xxx@xxx.com" needs to be updated.

I have changed my Apple ID password recently. But I've never used iMessage, don't expect to any time soon. Is it somehow starting up automatically when the computer boots? It's not listed in Users & Groups > Login Items.

How can I get iMessage to stop doing this? It's very annoying.

on macOS, Messages's settings are controlled within the Message app itself.
launch Messages on yr mac, in Messages go to Preferences/Settings/iCloud and unclick Enable this account and unclick Enable iCloud Messages and Sign Out.

Thanks for reply. That works, though I don't like that I have to tell it not to run. I prefer to control my computer, rather than have it connecting me to places on the 'Net on its own.
