Our 8 year old bought herself a guitar with her allowance! Awesome. And we wanted to check out Fender Play to help her learn. This is her first online service and she does have an iPad logged in as her child / Family Sharing Apple ID. I wanted to take advantage of the 3 month free trial of Fender Play so I created an account, and later on figured out they allow Sign in with Apple.

I figured that this would be a "more safe / secure" way of having her access Fender Play than creating an account/pass with Fender but the button just didn't work. It just spins when you tap on Sign in with Apple. I also questioned whether I'd be able to entitle the 3 month free trial if I signed in that way. Fender has a link with "Sign in with Apple" instructions that mention that 2FA is required so I took the time to enable that for the child account.

It still didn't work so I started to run the iPadOS 14.1 update thinking some code issue was at play.

Finally I found out that Apple prevents Sign in with Apple for child accounts where the user is under 13. None of the errors actually showed us that until about 45 minutes of digging and troubleshooting on support sites. Fender's app never did specifically indicate that error.

Shouldn't "Sign in with Apple" be the more secure method of wrangling these types of apps/accounts for a child?

I can't believe I don't have the ability for her to request that I approve her Sign in with Apple for Fender Play. I don't want to go in and change her age in her Apple account due to other ripple effects it could have.

Does anybody else think this is odd?

Congrats on the new guitar! My 12yo daughter bought herself a bass guitar over the summer. \m/

My daughter and I have been sharing Fender Play and I opted to just create an account for myself without using Sign in with Apple. I'm not sure that I find it odd, necessarily, but their likely doing this to stay in line with COPPA.

Best of luck with your daughter's musical journey.
