I set up a wireless netgear router at a friends house with his XP laptop. It has been working great up untill now. He said now the signal strength keeps going from none to max many times. He said it will do it about once a second and web pages will load fast then slow then fast again. What would cause the signal strength to do that even when the computer and router are next to each other? THanks guys!

In addition to rebooting his computer, he should also try restarting the router itself. Sometimes these things just start acting funny... a restart will usually eliminate such problems.

latest firmware?

Sometimes it helps to update the firmware on the router. You can check the firmware version when you log into the router with a browser, and you can compare that to the latest version available from NetGear. But I agree with the previous post that often rebooting the router with resolve this type of issue (at least temporarily).
