I wouldn't mind upping the character limit. I wouldn't mind lowering the # of lines available either. The vertical space taken up by signatures bothers me more often than how long a signature is lengthwise.
I like this idea, but usually I find the vertical space a post takes up has a lot more to do with the avatar height and the text in the Location filed. Also it might be hard to implement... (Can you limit pixel height, or perhaps sig text size?). I'm all for upping the character limit, some pithy or clever signatures don't lend themselves to 150 Characters. ;)

Well there already is a 6 line limit and you cant put images in signatures.

I dig the limits. But I do wish there could be some expanded markup limits. I tried to support the folding team a while back but couldnt fit all of it in my sig with links and all.

But in general I'm all for the less is more.

it bothers me that markup is included in the limits. that is all.

The 150-character limit does not include markup. You can have up to 150 of displayed text. To that you can add up to another 150 characters for markup tags. So the total size including tags can be up to is 300.

The limits are arbitrary cutoffs. There will always be some members who favor increases and some who favor decreases.

The goal of the signature rule is to strike the right balance to allow creativity and individuality without adding too much of a distraction for those reading the forums. The rule has been tinkered with over the years, but still aims for this goal. Some forum sites allow images in signatures; we don't since they are a major distraction. We're a bit more businesslike even if it spoils some of the fun.

The signature rules no longer permit blank lines and lines of punctuation in signatures, even though they can be decorative or help readability, because they take up extra vertical space, and we especially want to avoid tall signatures. It helps when forum members avoid large text sizes and favor wide signatures (fewer linebreaks) over tall signatures (more linebreaks).

The more "bulk" we allow in signatures, the more likely it is that members will turn off the "Show Signatures" option in their User Options to avoid seeing signatures at all.

I would love to see a ban on the "here is the crap I own" lists in sigs. If we do away with Comic Sans, can we get some more choices.

Try asking the powers that be very nicely in a PM. I hear it's worked before.

I think they should be reduced. And comic sans should be banned. And colours / smilies in sigs should be banned.

and that bloody :apple: smilie should be limied to one use, per user, per month. it's waaaaaaaaaaaaay too overused.

Aww, so you don't like my sig then? :(

I don't mind the smiles and text, so as long as it isn't insanely large.

and a lower number of posts to reach the avatar limit would be fine too ...

I think the current limit is fine, but maybe after a years membership you get to use an avatar? I dunno. I have an avatar so it doesn't concern me :p

I don't mind the list of products in the sig thing because it means I don't have to ask them what computer they are using (sometimes).

Oh, and I don't always link to youtube videos, I just thought this one really looked like Halo multiplayer.

talk about overkill.

What? You don't like my signature? I'm hurt. ;)

So maybe it is a little long, but I like it. :D And I tried to do you all a favor by requesting that it be displayed at the smallest available font.

6 lines can get to be too much too though at times, especially when it's a laundry list (sometimes literally!).

I think the limits are fine as they are, for sigs, avatars, etc.

Like someone else said, it encourages creativity. ;) :)

How the HELL did you get that HUGE signature?!?!

That's why there's this nifty input in member profiles. :)

They can be annoying, I agree - however, I'm glad we have the rules. I think the signature is actually a privilege, almost. I'm just glad we have it. I also agree with less is more. :)

And the damned :apple: smilies are extremely annoying when used constantly and when putting them at the end of your statement/question.

Let me clarify; I know that we can't put images in signatures here (and I think that's good). What I was getting at was even with the current 6 line limit somebody could put 6 lines of "size 7" text and create a lot of vertical space in doing so.

While the above example is technically against the rules (i.e. signatures being "oversized"), if a limit was placed on the pixel height of a signature or (even easier to implement) a character size limit was placed on signatures, the vertical space issues would be better controlled. If the line limit was reduced to 4 or 5 in conjunction, then perhaps the character limits could be eased to allow more flexibility and still prevent eye-sore signatures.

Putting a limit on vertical pixel size would be nice, but our software doesn't automate that. So we limit characters automatically, and lines via a forum rule, and leave it to our members to report problem signatures to the moderators, who use common sense to judge when a signature is unnecessarily tall or distracting. Six lines of size 7 text would be reported to the moderators, confirmed as a problem, and the member would have to change his or her signature.
