One of the reasons why I almost bought a MBP 2015 was that it has no fan and is "silent". Nothing bothers me more than a computer that I can hear working. Drives me nuts. When I had a 2013MBA for 6 months, it was dead silent which I found to be amazing and surprising. I picked up a rMBP 13" recently and I'm surprised and happy to report this thing is also silent. Even during photoshop and other image editing programs. Clearly these devices still have a fan but apple has done such a good job with the fan design they are truly silent computers. I even went so far as to put my ear right on the unit, and it's still silent. So if anyone is sold on the Macbook having no fan and being Apple's "first silent" macbook, well don't buy into that marketing because while the no fan is true, the silent part is not.

13" MBP 2015 here, you can hear the fans if you actually do anything to require cooling down the machine....

Exactly, like probably editing 4k video ;). Which obviously the MBR would struggle with. But don't get me wrong i still think the MBR is a AWESOME machine! I just currently prefer my 2015 MBPR. Now... if they put out a 14" version in V2 with a some more wrist space for my large paws in that same sexy sleek body. Now we are talking!

YUP! They had one Gold MBR on display, but none in stock. They did have a base model SG about a hour from me, really didn't feel like driving. But at $1,099 with a 10% movers coupon was WAY too good to pass up! Personally, i don't travel and like the bigger wrist space on the keyboard as well as the 1.3" screen bump. I'll cross my fingers for a 14" MBR in version 2 or 3. But i got the MBPR for $1041 with tax out the door . No way i was passing that up. I'm a bigger muscular guy 6'2 about 220lb. Moving the MBPR around my house is light work :D :D.

Funny another guy was buying one, and he kept asking the lady "Are you sure you have the right model and not the non retina" Lol. Because the non retina Pro and the Retina are actually the SAME PRICE right now .

Yeah.. I paid $1,234 for mine with 256GB (128GB just isn't enough for me) and the guy at best buy had to check with his manager to make sure I wasn't scamming him or something. Maybe it's me, but I think employees should be aware of sales and discounts in their own department and not act like you showed them a picture of yourself naked when you pull out the coupons.

One of the reasons why I almost bought a MBP 2015 was that it has no fan and is "silent".
First, I think you meant you almost bought a rMB, not a MBP, which does have a fan. Second, because you haven't pushed your notebooks to the point where the fan ramps up to an audible level doesn't mean that others will have the same workload. The new retina MacBook is the first Mac notebook without a fan or any other moving parts. That may appeal to some people. It's not a gimmick, because it's real.
The fanless part adds to it mentally, but in practice the rMBP 13" is also silent.
As already stated, it may be silent for you because you don't push it enough. Like many other users, I've heard the fans on mine on several occasions.

Um to the OP, the 2015 rMBP is not fanless. Mine ramps up when gaming all the time. Otherwise its very quiet. But there are fans. Not on the MB though.

Yeah, it was a typo, I fixed it. thank you.

The reason why I think it's great is because it has no moving parts now...so I don't feel nervous to swing it around like I do with my iPad

Silent just means that the processing power is limited such that it doesn't need a fan.

My MBA is silent - no fan - 99% of the time. The fan kicks on on the rare occasion I play games or on a few other programs I use. It means the computer's performance can continue unabated instead of being throttled and lagging.

With current processor technology, it's not an advantage, it's a sacrifice.

I mean that is pretty valid.... Not playing either side of the fence here. But there is a reason "at this day in time" Only the core M lower clocked processors don't need a fan. Isn't the base model MBR actually a "900mhz" but factory overlocked by Apple to 1.1ghz, i am fairly sure i read that somewhere.

Man takes me back i remember having a "POWERFUL" 800mhz intel pentium Sony Vaio tower, "when Vaio" was the **** in my room when i was 13-ish. My parents got it for me for Christmas. I was so STOKED! Had the 32" Sony Trinitron CRT to match! :D

Today... specs and numbers can be SO misleading. Like some of these "quad core" or "octacore" phones. Are the specs running on iOS or Android, OSX or Windows. Numbers can be VERY misleading. Im sure those who got the MBR for their needs it does the job fine.

Core M is only going to get more powerful. So if it's fast enouh now, just wait. And goarding forward, the rMB being fanless will definitely be a big feature.

And yes i agree with that. That is why i put "at this day in time". I have no doubt the new MBR with just get better, and better & better. Just like the MBA did. I have high hopes for future models. 14" & 12" screen to choose from would be Awesome!

Yeah, there's lots of reasons. I think it's extremely sexy hardware. No question. The fanless part adds to it mentally, but in practice the rMBP 13" is also silent.

This is good info, I don't even know what twitch is. What model laptop do you have? Is that program GPU or CPU intensive?

Twitch is an app (platform???) mostly for watching other people play video games live...I'd personally rather play games myself than watch others do it ;-) But, it is a pretty big market now, that being said. Gaming becoming a spectator sport of sorts among those born in the 1990's and up it seems!

I casually watch it here & there, there is a few funny "show" type streams that play old school Nintendo games. Almost better than watching the "****" that is on TV now of days. You get a good laugh or two. I was born in the 80's so watching someone play Nintendo games and drinking a bit is always a good laugh. :D There are a few adult type nostalgia streams among the masses :)

but no one says hey, I'm going to get at new Macbook so I can edit for 4K video.
Well I got a 15.4" rMBP a year ago when 4K cameras first came out in order to be able to edit 4K video while traveling.

Will the 12" rMBP be up to the task of editing and rendering 4K video or will it be overburdened because it has reduced graphics horsepower and lacks a fan?

"Silent Macbook" I don't think was really a gimmick to be fair. I can make an rMPB 13 spin up it's fan to a noticeable level without much trying.

In general, comparing my 1.2GHz Macbook to an rMBP 13 (2013 16GB) for the vast majority of the time the performance is actually the same.

In no way at all am I saying that the rMBP is as fast as the rMB. Since I got the rMBP I am using cloud services like Azure and Rackspace for heavier loads. This wasn't because the rMBP was "slow" at the tasks I was using. The inherent nature of how so many of the tools work causes general slow down on the laptop. Parallels Desktop for example just being installed can cause slowdowns (not necessarily "noise) to happen across the system when doing so many things.

Any laptop you get is as fast as the use case you have for it. Right now, I'm sticking with a minimized set of applications that DON'T install random background tasks and things are running very very well. Photoshop's crazy amount of extra stuff that it installs is a perfect example. I don't want the Creative Cloud services running in the background all the time. I don't want the additional hooks of Parallels running to be ready just in case I open it up.

Computer usage is a series of trade offs. It is whether you are running a Mac or PC.

I don't think I'd recommend to anyone at all that they run Photoshop as a full time profession on rMBP. Not because Photoshop is horrible but the culmination of all of the misc stuff it puts on does put a burden on the system.

If you want something that is ultra portable the Macbook is great. If you are willing to sacrifice a little bit on size for longer battery life, and an increase in performance then the Macbook Air is a great choice. If you want to work on editing video from a remote spot and have the fantastic brute force performance of that larger thermal envelope and fan then the Retina Macbook Pro is just a dream.

I have my Retina Macbook because my personal work needs for 90% of the time fit within the burstable range of what the Retina Macbook has provided very well so far, and I'm willing to sacrifice performance on longer workloads to something in the cloud if it means I can have a laptop that weighs about as much as an iPad with portable keyboard.

For me, doing my longer running tasks on a laptop of any form seems silly considering I can spin up something that can run it far more quickly without sacrificing my battery life.

The Retina Macbook Pro is an absolute beast of a performance power house. I can load up a single VM and take the noise level of the laptop to noticeable in the room pretty quickly.

Not having that stuff run locally for me means I can start a workload on my Retina Macbook, and access it immediately from any machine I can log into.

The Retina Macbook is a bet on much larger workloads not being limited to something you have on your lap. Being limited to something on your lap will always be limited by power, space, and weight.

I think you meant rMB 12". 4k video didn't come out last year, it's been around much longer than that... last year was when the average joe started hearing about more. That being said I believe the 1.2 and especially the 1.3GHz model will do a very good editing 4K videos. That doesn't change that people won't be buying it for the purpose of editing 4K video. Not to mention the 12" inch display is too small for such work as a main system. For example my 13.3" inch display feels too small for photoshop. It's harder to work on.

What's making the noise if there's no moving parts? (besides the keyboard)
