I love my iPhone 13 silicone case - the way it feels and the grippiness. Is there a large version of this type of case for an iPad Air? I haven’t found one with that same texture (I don’t care about having a flap/cover)

There isn’t for the iPad Air.

But have you looked at any third-party manufacturers? You probably won’t find the same quality control/material that Apple uses, but there’s so many more options out there that are adequate and fairly priced under Apple.

I have looked at 3rd parties too (in fact my iPhone silicone case is a cheap Ornato brand clone from amazon). The only cases available seem to be trifolds and clear tpu. In the meantime I’ll just use a cheap TPU case, it’s good enough

Has it arrived yet? Any thoughts on what it’s like vs the official smart folio?
Mine arrived, ordered three more. It’s nothing like the folio. It’s very much like the silicone back covers for the Mini 4. It’s not as comfortable to me, but that’s because of the square sides rather than the rounded ones on the Mini 4 and 5. It isn’t as sturdy on some of the sides because the long edge where the pencil fits is very thin. It wobbles a bit when you touch it. I don’t think it’s a design flaw, it’s just how things have to be for the pencil to charge.

Mine arrived too. I love the grippy feel of it (it’s identical to the iPhone silicone case) unlike the smoothness of the folio cover. Unfortunately mine was damaged during transit but the vendor has sent me a return label for a refund. I will be reordering it. LibbyLA is spot on about the thinness/flimsiness of the edge where the pencil attaches. I guess they have to make it so the magnets can still attach.

I did notice that it’s not flimsy on the bit of edge between the speaker openings on the side with the volume buttons so it seems there is some sort of reinforcement inside in the stiffer places. I wish they’d reinforced more of the edges. I still like it, though, and it’s easy to put on and take off when I want to use a folio case.
