Does the latest generation still support optical cables or do I need also dongles for that?

USB-C only from 2016 onward.
From what I understand the optical cable had to be connected to the audio out, which is still there. Except for some reason it doesn't support optical cables anymore.

Most 3.5mm jacks never supported optical out. The MacBook was somewhat unique in that respect. USB and other interfaces seem to be more popular than TOSlink.

Here is an article on the changes in the 2016 and beyond systems. https://www.macrumors.com/2016/11/04/new-macbook-pro-models-lack-optical-audio-out/
