As per the title?

I have a brand new silver SS S7 (got it yesterday) and it already has two tiny nicks on it.

Hard to see, and has to be under certain lighting conditions and angles.

I took it off the charger and it slipped onto a wooden shelf (practically no drop) then fell about a foot onto carpet.

I know SS is meant to scratch easily, but this is ridiculous.

So how long have you had yours, and how is the case for scratches?

I was thinking about getting some of those Cape Cod polishing cloths, to buff the little scratches out.

Have any of you used these before? If so, what were your results?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

PS: I’m gutted! :(

Sorry to hear about the scratches. But it's one reason I stick with aluminum. Dropping one in the manner you describe doesn't cause visible scratches, and I'm very clumsy so I drop mine like that all the time.

How are you getting on with the watch, aside from the scratches?

To be honest, I’m really p****d about what happened. It’s definitely ruined my day.

But it literally dropped about and inch onto a wooden shelf, then a foot onto carpet. How the hell could that cause two tiny scratches?

I wonder if they were there beforehand?

As for how I’m getting on with it, it is straining my eyes a bit. I have small wrists, so bought the 41mm.

I went for a walk around the block earlier, without my phone, and finally got separation to work :).

I’ve already set up data on it, which is only £5pm with o2.

So have you ever owned a SS AW? If so, did you end up with many scratches on the casing? I’m thinking of buying some of those Cape Cod cloths, to see if I can buff out the tiny scratches.

Thanks again for your response, and I wish you well.

Don’t be gutted, this is the only AW finish that you can do something about it with. I actually liked building up a patina on mine, I cleaned it when I sold it, literally 2mins to make it brand spanking new again.

Series 5, maybe a couple hundreds or thousands of scratches? But it "works" with the stainless steel and I don't care about it. An aluminum Apple Watch would look much worse with only one or two scratches.

Thanks for your understanding.

However, I have clinical OCD so it’s difficult not to be gutted.

What did you use to polish out the scratches on your SS AW? Cape Cod is apparently the go to?

Did you not try to buff or polish them out?

Do you have any photos?

No, I haven't. Aside from how scratch-prone I heard they are, I've always considered the watch a gadget I'd update every few years, so I've gone for the more economic option.

I do recall reading people claiming they were able to polish out slight scratches, but I wasn't paying attention to what methods they used. Did you try looking on YouTube? I'd think there'd be how-to videos on how to remove scratches.

There are quite a few videos on YouTube, and most use Cape Cod polishing cloths.

I actually used a tiny drop of metal polish on a polishing rag but yes cape cod is probably safer. There is a thread on here by someone who was really rough with their SS it is quite something. Search ‘SS Heavy use’ (or something like that.

No, since it will get scratched again anyways sooner or later. I prefer to hide scratches between a bunch of other scratches.
And I tried to take a picture, but it just won't work (looks much worse than in real life). Seems like I need some good macro focus.

So you’ve never given it a go?

What series is it?

Cape Cod cloths are meant to be the best.

Just posting to say I am also very annoyed by scratches on the SS. Be glad you have the silver and not gold/graphite as you couldn’t buff them out without removing the colour. Cape Cod works for me but I hate finding new scratches despite being extremely careful with my watch. I’m thinking of going back to aluminium for the S8.

Care to share some before & or after photos?

This will be the first AW I keep (I’ve returned a few, but I’m giving this one a good go this time) and if I end up liking it, I think I’ll go for graphite for the S8.

Wouldn't a scratch on the graphite REALLY annoy you? :D

Afraid I polished it very recently with no before photos, so it just looks like new now. Until the next time it needs doing!

A few weeks ago I bought a used S0 SSS wich looked really bad (but included a Steel Link) so i took the risk.. While the Link took several hours to get it back into a good condition (cleaning, buffing, cleaning buffing…) I could remove many scratches with a Cape Cod Cloth from the watch.
It was one reason to return the S7 Nike and order a S7 SSS.

I've had one for 3 years. No matter how careful you are with it, you will bump it into stuff like desks, so scratches on the body are inevitable. They do bother me, but a scratch on the screen would bother me way more, which is why I bought the SS model back then (screen won't scratch with anything except basically diamonds and sapphires). Plus, even a scratched SS body looks much better than plain aluminum because it shines.

The Cape Cod cloths work really well for small scratches on the SS: they won’t take out really deep gouges, but the day to day surface scratches come out really well. If I were you I’d get some from Amazon and give it a go, they’re not expensive. Just be careful not to get any of the polishing compound that’s embedded into them into any of the ports.

If you have "clinical OCD," the silver SS Apple Watch is absolutely the one to get. Not only will Cape Cod cloths take out all the small stuff, but if you gouge the watch badly, you can still polish it out with something stronger like Mother's Mag and Aluminum polish. I posted this more than six years ago, but yeah - I banged my S0 on a glass counter less than a month after getting it, and was able to complete remove the gouge with some polish and a battery-powered dremel from the dollar store, fitted with a q-tip rather than a bit. I posted before and after pics here:

Or you could get a case. Yeah, you won't be able to enjoy the steel look, so if you are going this route, probably better to get the aluminum. But it's another possible way to keep yourself from obsessing over scratches.

I know this is not answering the OPs question, but I am rocking a Series 6 Titanium and boy it looks flawless after one year of extensive use. I wear it almost 24/7 for all kind of workouts (gym, running, swimming in pool and ocean). I live in a tropical SE Asian country with lots of sweating and the coating is just so resistant. Titanium is the best Apple Watch there is.
