I wonder if stock is limited and Verizon and AT&T lobbied hard to negotiate with Apple to secure more devices for their networks.

What exactly is SIM free? It doesn’t come with Sim or can’t use SIM at all?

"Price includes a $30 [AT&T] [Verizon] instant discount. Requires activation."

Does activation mean a new account, or even existing users?

It’s a bit confusing but I’m assuming they’re saying It’s $30 off sim free but your carrier will whack you with an activation fee. Believe they do with sim free as well though which makes their language puzzling.

getting it waived is a ymmv situation

But what does activation mean in this case? If I simply move my sim to a new phone, AT&T does not charge me an activation fee. So is this discount only for new subscribers / adding a line?

I believe they do though. They can track which device is associated with your SIM card without you notifying them

I think carrier outright still requires inputting your # when ordering too whereas Sim free does not. But the former is still true

They definitely do not charge an activation fee when simply moving a sim (and existing account) to a new device.

I think you are right. I usually fight it. not sure if I will take the time to do that this time or not.

They did on my Wifes iPhone 11 that we just got her last June. I called and fought that and they did finally credit it.

The activation by carrier may mean we don't have to punch in code to activate the electronic SIM at purchase itself. I have always purchased SIM free iPhones and been on T-mobile for a long time. This is the first time I am going to buy T-mobile phone from Apple because it took a T-mobile non corporate store worker an hour to activate my phone. I am hoping a year later if activating a e-SIM is simpler, I will buy SIM free phone and activate it myself. I wish Apple had given more information on this, because it is new. I am going to checkout tmonews website to understand what is the difference between SIM free and a T-mobile phone.

Did you buy the phone from the carrier? If yes, that may be why. I've never purchased a phone from my carrier. Just bought new phone, pulled sim from old phone and put into new phone and away I go. Never a fee.

No, we bought it directly from Apple. Put it on Apple Card
