I have four phones on my account and used one of those lines to purchase a new iPhone 4S that I intend to swap with my current iPhone 4. I’m considering doing the SIM swap to accomplish this (although I remain unclear if I have to swap the SIM’s prior to turning the new iPhone on- The phone I am upgrading is in another state so I don’t want to activate that line since I don’t want to deactivate their service).

My question is what would happen if I just activate the new iPhone to my current phone number? Does AT&T even care? Why should I bother with the SIM swap?
I suspect the worst case scenario is that AT&T decides to charge me the difference or that the upgrade on my plan is switched to another two years.

Does anyone have any experience with this scenario? I've performed both a Google and forum search and haven't seen any info on this.

Thanks in advance.
