Somebody got it working on offline mode shortly after it launched. Don't believe anything EA says.

Including this, which they said it would get a while back. I'll believe Simcity gets an offline mode when it gets it.

Really?

If true it validates my reasons for not partaking of digital distribution or always online games.

Hey I'm just guessing but moving to an offline model would allow such a move and it's ea after all. There the king of screw you over operators out there!!

at first when it was announced i was really looking forward to buying this game

when i realized it was a major failure, even now that they've announced an offline mode, i will definitely never waste my money for that

they should think twice before making stupid moves for famous games like SimCity

I have lost all faith in the coding expertise of EA.

— Currently two Sims 3+Expansions (on Origin) installations on my children's Macs are an unparalleled nightmare.

— A few months ago it was 2x Spore.

— Before that it was Red Alert.

Give me (and my kids) a break EA.
No other developers are this bad. No other developers are giving me a hard time.
Get your house in order.
For now, I'm not buying a single new game that says EA on the box.

They stated bigger city sizes aren't coming because the Glassbox engine doesn't scale well. Only higher-end computers would be able to run them. Who knows if that's really true, but maybe now some intrepid modders can work a miracle.

Couldn't they go the the other way?

Make the glass engine run in smaller neighbourhoods but have a region engine that allows multiple neighbourhoods to run concurrently also doing an overview level of modeling. So you might have 4 neighbourhoods active on screen and the surrounding data active ready to come on-screen. Allowing you to play the whole region as a single city or multiple cities and play all the space of a region.

Good. On-line only means no deal, no buy. We, and many people, don't have reliable internet connections and when we do have a connection it is not fast and we can't hog it. I'm not interested in playing with their servers.

This is a huge victory for gamers everywhere!

Requiring an online connection for games that could be played offline is an unneeded oppression and I'm happy to see EA reverse this foolhardy decision.

Oppression?? LOL... you actually use a word that would equate this with Tiananmen Square, the long fight for civil rights, or the torturing of humans, being sold into slavery, and loss of their rights in some foreign nations?

Yes, we Americans sound pretty elitist and entitled, don't we?

I'd thank you to not lump us all in a pile. Many Americans are not stupid enough to seriously think being forced into online mode on some random game (one that isn't even good enough to care about) is some sort of oppression. Well, I'm not at least.

Little too late, EA.

You shafted me too many times and SimCity was the final nail in the coffin back then.

Since then I don't buy any EA game new anymore. And very likely even that's going to slim down, retro or simply older games excluded.
In fact, the "buy EA used only" rule has been applied only for 2 or 3 games since then.
They just don't ship that much interesting stuff anymore.

Ubisoft is smaller, but they sure know their game much better.
2K for the sports games.
etc...

No, I don't miss you EA, you're dismissed, please die and never come back, because you're a driving force of why the gaming industry is going to *****.

I've been playing with Sim City since it's first incarnation on the Mac in the 1980's. I've loved the game through all these years. My last Sim City purchase was Sim City 4 on a PC. I pretty much abandoned Windows ager returning to Mac in 2011. Last year when Sim City was released I contemplated pulling that PC Laptop out of the closet, but didn't the Mac version was coming. The Mac version came and I didn't like the idea of it being online along with the hefty $60 price tag. This past Christmas I got it on sale for almost 50% off and I love the game. Navigation is jumpier than I like, but overall the game is working good for me. I do find the smaller cities both a gain and a hinder but for the most part I like it. The fact that it is now supposed to go to an offline mode are great. I don't always want to be online while playing a game. I still love Sim City, but at times do think that in some cases less is better.

Now id the envelopers of Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 could return to the model used in Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 I would be a happy camper. RCT3 is OK, but had ore fun in the original 2 incarnations of the game. Not everyone likes the 3D aspect of the game.

One of the most easily anticipated games i'd had for a while... most definitely the most disappointing. The updates have at least made it playable - the lack of flexibility compared to the original games however is unforgivable. the lack of terrain editing, the pitifully small maps and the restrictions on motorway connections etc make for a sorely lacking game.

It's EA. What did you expect? A good game? You're dreaming if you did.

Here comes the white flag. They never got the region play thing right anyway. It was an interesting concept, though.

I know it's a beaten to death argument, but, could this actually mean bigger maps will be coming? I don't mind if offline mode exists but given the gameplay is incredibly short compared to Cities XL, it still doesn't seem like a great purchase.

I doubt it, I can't stand the tiny maps in the new Sim City.

Cities XL is pretty good, but I still think Sim City 4 is the best.

I've played the new SimCity & it is pretty fun. However, many of complaints we've heard I share. I'd like bigger maps, bring back terraforming & underground building (IE subways, pipes, etc.).

One feature I'd like to see is instead of having maps specific sizes, maybe having one big map (like the regions in SimCity 4) and the player can buy land. That way, you can grow your cities as needed, sell some land to neighbors, share resources, etc. Manage land like you manage power, water & garbage.

Excellent news. The always online requirement was the only reason I haven't bought it. I guess they finally woke up and started listening to their customers for a change. Either that or sales are far below what they expected so they've had to change their policy. Either way it's a win for people power. :D

This is what I've been waiting for, YES! I will add that I do feel lied to. This offline mode supposedly was Impossible with how the game was programmed, claimed EA. It won't take much in the future for me to never buy an EA game again, however I will reward *this* good behavior so at least they know Offline Mode is valuable.

I think they said it would take a lot of time to remove the hooks into the online service and that features wouldn't be possible. Not sure it's been proven that they were wrong.

----------

But, but... You need THE CLOUD to work out all that insane 50 sq ft city action!

The cloud was actually for what happens to the economy in multiple regions and globally, I believe.

If true it validates my reasons for not partaking of digital distribution or always online games.

How does that validate your reasons? If anything, it should invalidate them.

SC4 is great with mods, but even still it's old and buggy. It's disappointing EA let that franchise fall into such a bad place.

I think it's clear that there are different levels of such things, and many words are allowed to be used for all sorts of different topics. This comment was about video games.

There was no "equating" except in your mind. Perhaps you have the problem.

...........

Still not buying this game. Not enough improvement in this news.

In terms of video games, I'd say forcing a singleplayer offline game to be multiplayer and online only to be oppression. Its is forcing players to be connected to the internet at all times for a game that really shouldn't need it at all.

Imagine if you'd spent £40 on the game, only to find that you also needed an internet connection to play it. Pretty oppressive, especially when EA refused to hand out refunds.
