"could not validate source"

Oh ********, I had that on my Mini before as well with other OS X installers.

Do you happen to have a copy of Toast Toast Titanium, if so that can do the same job.
I will also look into the Lion Installer which you downloaded, this might also work.
Give me a bit of time, I might have to download it and look if it works.

I edited one of my last posts on the first page, I said there that this will not create an OS X system, it will create an Installer on the USB, together with some Utilities, If you are able to boot from it later on (by holding Option at startup) you could try and repair the HD before even Installing anything, I would do both a HD/Volume repair and a permissions repair.

i have an external burner. but now even a dvdr is too small. The os is over 6 gigs.

Double Layer!

There is also another way to Repair another Mac or install on another Mac, it is called Target Disk Mode and but it needs Firewire on both machines, now, the Macbook most likely has Firewire, your rMBP does not have and needs a FireWire Cable, if you have one you can use this method but I guess you don't have a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter.

im not sure if the mac has a sd slot. I check tomorrow, gotta get some sleep. thanks a ton for your time@!!!

Back at it again. Does anyone else have any input? Im trying to avoid goingto buy a thumb drive, might have to.

I just bought a new 320 gig hd. I restored the osx to the drive. When I boot holding option i get the internal and thumb drive option. Either one I click takes me to apple logo with spinner. Then the circle with slash through it appears. Im assuming its a bad or the wrong version of osx. It is 10.6.7. Is that too new of a os? What version should I install?
