I want to buy some Ram, but I'm not sure that I wanna buy it all at once. Can I buy a 1 gig stick and put it in with one of my 256's or simply put it in by itself and have an empty slot?

1gb + 256mb is fine. Though I recommend getting 2 x 1gb (you're eventually going to buy it anyway).
