Took less time than you spent to make that post
I guess it's good for a quick fix or for people who have less than a gig of space but if I was that low on space I would be finding other ways to free up gigs of space rather than mb of space. In other words move pics off phone, music you don't use, delete messages especially ones with videos tied to them...etc..

Well this could free up gigs of space for some.

Also, I once looked at EACH one of ~3000 files from iPhone back-up (I posted about that experience on this forum a couple of times). There were many files from apps that had long been deleted, messaging apps' never-before-seen stickers, thumbnails from in-app stores, pictures I deleted long ago, attachments I downloaded AND deleted, etc. Yes, iOS does self-cleaning, but what were these files doing here? I wouldn't perfectly rely on iPhone to manage the storage.

I'm interested in this and wondering how much detritus my iPhone has accumulated as I restored my iPhone 6 Plus off of an iPhone 4S that was restored off an iPhone 3GS which may have once been restored off of an iPod touch (if that's even possible). Mostly I didn't want to lose things like texts and game high scores although I've deleted most of those games now...

Then I will have to move those pictures and songs back to my iPhone.

Like I said on previous posts, this trick gives me at least a clear picture of how much more pictures/videos/documents I can cram into my iPhone. And "self-cleaning" doesn't work on pictures, downloading email attachments, etc from my experience, so it is better to be prepared. On vacation I can easily take 1gb+ worth of pictures and videos.

I suspect that these "junk files" don't take up much space. Maybe less than 10mb?

You can export text messages using an app to export text messages to store them on computer
